.su Lives On, Stronger Than Ever 188

CWRUisTakingMyMoney writes "Yahoo! Finance has a story about the defunct Soviet Union's .su TLD. 'Sixteen years after the superpower's collapse, Web sites ending in the Soviet ".su" domain name have been rising — registrations increased 45 percent this year alone. Bloggers, entrepreneurs and die-hard communists are all part of a small but growing online community resisting repeated efforts to extinguish the online Soviet outpost.'"

It looks like all those "In Soviet Russia" jokes will be on-topic for once.
    • Isn't there a "insovietrussia" tag?

Because this would truly be its moment of glory.
    • I wonder, somehow, if the CyberArmy ever had anything to do with driving .su registrations? I mean, we did have that one challenge where you had to log in from a .su domain (though you were meant to fake your reverse DNS, not everyone did that)... Not too many other reasons I can imagine wanting an .su domain other than vanity.

There's comparatively few .su domains out there...
A lot of people have taken to registering under uncommon TLDs in order to get the name they want, since virtually every name anyone might want under the major TLDs have already been taken.

Ofcourse you're right about the vanity, some people just collect domains under weird TLDs...

Do .su domains still require you to hold a passport from a former soviet country?

There's also a .cat domain, but it has quite strict requirements... I tried to register top.cat when

          don't think so.

seems the prices on .su domains have dropped down to the same level as .ru domains too (they used to be a LOT more expensive) which probablly has something to do with this uptake surge.

I've actually wanted to own a .su domain for quite some time, but I can't seem to find a registrar that'll do them to someone outside of russia for a REASONABLE sum. A lot of the ones that do seem to offer them want 3-figure amounts for some reason.

Does anyone actually know of a decent registrar that's not stupidly expensive for .su domains?

Nic.ru [www.nic.ru] seems to be the main site. nic.tld is often the place to go at least for info on a TLD.

Their service agreement form allows you to specify you're a US citizen as well as to choose to pay in US Dollars. They're charging 600 rubles/year for a domain, which is currently US$25.51 [yahoo.com].

The last we heard of the .su domain here on slashdot was when we were discussing Outdated Domains to meet their end [slashdot.org]. Like .um from that article, .su was high on the list for the chopping block. *Sniff* that article was one of my first submissions to be accepted on Slashdot...*tear*

    Erm? *Ahem!* .um...

Russian official: Yes, that's what we wanted you to think! [laughs]

Well, it looks as if the century's greatest lie has been exposed, as communist factories start producing tanks again, the Berlin Wall re-erects itself out of the ground, and Lenin rises from the grave, saying "Must Crush Capitalism, Rrr!".

    (From SNPP [snpp.com])

  • If you think about it, it's kinda odd that there is an *.su TLD at all.  After all, back in the day the internet was essentially a U.S. military thing designed to protect military communications in the event of an *.su nuclear attack.

    • Most of the material assets ended up in the hands of whatever former Soviet republic it happened to be in. The Russian Federation ended up with most of the foreign assets, which was only fair, considering that they'd been paying the bills for the Soviet government for some time. In fact, it was their refusal to continue doing so that forced the USSR to close shop.

As for the intangibles: the Red Flag, the slogans, etc., those were just on loan from the parent enterprise, the World Communist Revolution(TM). T

In the FSU the mood is growing to recreate the USSR in one for or another.

In 1918 the USSR was the size of Belgium, including only the Moscow and St. Petersburg area. The whole Siberia and Far East of Russia were occupied by the USA, Canada and Japan. South, Ukraine, was hold by France, etc. Still somehow they manged to fight out these powers and unite the country.

In 1941 Germany, Italy, Hungary, Romania, Finland occupied the whole European part of the USSR. Chances of the USSR were pitiful. The victory was all but celebrated. Still we know the outcome.

The "Great Victory Victory in the Cold War" is from the same league. The territory of the "defeated" Russia is 4.5 times larger than the territory of the whole European Union. Russia holds the world stock of natural gas and oil, and other key resources.

The price of these resources has grown 10 times since 2001. The West is sucked in into the was which cannot be won. As result the West is approaching to the economical crisis and social unrest of an unprecedented magnitude.

Do not celebrate too early. .su still may hit the mainstream.

Perhaps (being an American) I'm guilty of ignorance here, but could you point me to some historical sources indicating that the USSR was the size of Belgium in 1918? I'm more curious than anything...I presume that was the division of the country most strongly held by the Bolsheviks? Also, I've never heard of U.S. / Canadian occupation of Siberia and the far east (I presume you're refering to present day Alaska - also, I know Japan and Russia had some longstanding territorial disputes and conflicts in tha

The O.P. is mostly making stuff up. Although there were British and American troops in Murmansk and Arkhangelsk at the end of World War I, most of the non-Bolshevik-controlled parts of Russia were controlled by other factions of the Russian civil war.

As a European I am SO happy that "the West" is more than the US of A... the EU countries are not or barely involved in war. And it's primarily the USA that is in deep, deep economical trouble.

    Unbreakable Union of freeborn Republics,
Great Russia has welded forever to stand.

United and mighty, our Soviet land!

Sing to the Fatherland, home of the free,
Bulwark of peoples in brotherhood strong.

    • That's the best national anthem ever.

I'd say that La Marseillaise would give it a run for its money, but that one is just a bit too over-the-top to be taken seriously:

      Arise, children of the Fatherland,
The day of glory has arrived!
      Against us, tyranny's
      Bloody banner is raised,
      Bloody banner is raised.
Do you hear in the countryside
The braying of these ferocious soldiers?
They are coming into our midst
To cut the throats of our sons, our wives!

      To arms, citizens!
      Form your battalions!
      March, march!
      May impure blood,
      Water our fields!

Yep. By comparison, the Soviet anthem sounded a lot nobler.

La Marseillaise sure sounds a lot more civilized when they sing it in Casablanca [youtube.com]. I guess it helps that I don't speak French!

The clip I link above stops just before the most famous joke in the movie. Fortunately, that's available in a separate clip [youtube.com].
