Stony Stevenson writes "Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system is proving far less popular with new PC buyers than Windows XP did during XP's first year on the market, if statements by company chairman Bill Gates at this week's Consumer Electronics Show are any measure. Gates boasted that Microsoft has sold more than 100 million copies of Windows Vista since the OS launched last January. Based on Gates' statement, Windows Vista was aboard just 39% of the PC's that shipped in 2007. And Vista, in terms of units shipped, only marginally outperformed first year sales of Windows XP according to Gates' numbers. Assuming Gates is using consistent measurements across time — and any failure to do so would raise questions about Microsoft's reporting tactics — first year Vista unit sales have exceeded first year XP unit sales by little more than 10%."

    • The article says "Microsoft sold more XP than Vista". And the article you point to says "There were more Vista sold than MacOSX and Linux". So both are true, and the article you show is irrelevant in this case.
      • That wasn't what I meant.

Is Vista doing well or isn't it?

        Hmmmm??

        Make up our minds already.
        • The article I posted a link to says:

"Fifty-six percent of the machines Reeves sells run Microsoft Vista, while 44% are sold with XP."

This directly contravenes the figures in the originally posted article

So quit giving me a hard time, bozo.
          • It doesn't contravene anything. Some dude called Reeves sells more Vista than XP, big deal. Total worldwide sales figures are going to be more accurate than simply looking at one retailer.
        • Considering the facts in the article, I would say: no. * About 2/3 of new PCs sold with XP * Vista sold about 10% better than XP in its first year... For a PC market twice as big. And that's even without mentioning the "XP downgrade program" that several manufacturers have started for customers who bought a new PC but are not satisfied of Vista, and want XP instead. Windows is still doing well, but Vista is not. And it's not a good sign for Microsoft that their newest product isn't taking ground on their
