Barence writes "In what might be a glimpse of things to come in Windows 7, Microsoft is asking customers whether they would be interested in a new "Instant On" version of Windows. "We would like your feedback on a new concept," the Microsoft survey states. "The Instant On experience is different from 'Full Windows' because it limits what activities you can do and what applications you can have access to." Sounds interesting but hardly new: Asus and Dell have produced laptops that provide swift access to apps and data using Linux subsystems."

  • Yes, the capabilities would have to be limited: obviously, you can't use remote web pages or log on to the domain before the network comes up, etc. But the article was short on details as to the nature of the limits. Would they include the kind of "your business must be at least this tall to develop apps" limit commonly seen in the game console market?
  • It's a pretty safe bet that "instant-on Windows" will not be some kind of subset of Windows Vista or XP, for any reasonable understanding of "instant".

    It's also a pretty safe bet that Microsoft isn't going to create a whole new product.

    So barring smoke-and-mirrors like trying to pass off "resume from suspend" as "instant on", you know what this means -- Windows CE in firmware.
