Caldera Trial Update 85

In yet another decision from the Caldera vs. Microsoft trial, a judge has ruled that Caldera can sue Microsoft for "alleged violations outside the United States", because Microsoft apparently has a global impact. With any luck, the pretrial will start in August. You know, I'm beginning to wonder who has the bigger legal team these days.

Caldera Evidence Might be Thrown Out in MS Trial? 127

Coleslaw wrote in to send us a link over at Wired which talks about the Caldera/MS Trial. Apparently the latest issue is that a couple versions of Windows might not be admittable as evidence that MS altered Win3.1 to make DR-DOS produce errors, and to encourage the use of MS-DOS. Interesting bit.

Caldera wins a round in MS suit 77

Manuka writes to us with "new information on the Caldera-Microsoft trial. U.S. District Judge Dee Benson ruled against Microsoft on four motions to narrow the scope of the Caldera suit. " This ruling ends motions vis a vis anti-trust, however, there are at least five other motions yet to be considered. This has been one of the first signs of activity since the six month reprieve on the trial.

IBM strikes Linux deal with Caldera 26

An anonymous reader sent us an article which describes a new agreement between IBM and Caldera. The two companies will work together to make sure that IBMs stuff works under Linux, as well as make sure that Caldera's stuff screams on Big Blue's hardware. Looks interesting.

Re: The Charity Case for Red Hat 148

knarf noted a story linked from LinuxToday about Red Hat's IPO called Red Hat's Charity Case at Andover News. Several people noted that the story has many errors. Fortunately knarf has written a pretty good summary of what he considers wrong about the article. Several of them are a bit extreme, but many are good points. If you read the original, this is a good rebuttal worth reading.

Microsoft Legal Info Released 14

Two separate batches of Microsoft legal information have been released. The first, which was sent in by tbird, is about Caldera releasing a "statement of facts" relating to the MS/Caldera trial.
The second, from Thaddeus, is about ZDNet having information released about the "other" big MS trial (MS vs. DOJ) - you can read it here. I'll refrain from comment since IANAL :)

Quickies a go-go 63

tilly sent us a really interesting little article on Why O'Reily is Better written from the perspective of one of their authors. Rahga wrote in to comment that the new KDE Mascot Looks like Playstation's "Croc". He's got a little poll. I vote no, but its close. tilly wrote in to note that Sunday's User Friendly is funny- it features a the ultimate choice. And for the best Star Wars quickie today, Sharkey sent us a link to this picture. Just look at it. Somewhat related is this one from an Anonymous reader: The Dark Redemption which is a 26 minute short film being directed in Australia- it takes place 2 days before the beginning of Star Wars, A New Hope and is apparently being done with permission of Lucas. gwendolin wrote in to ask the ultimate question: Do you dare to eat pop rocks and drink pepsi at the same time? This is wierd stuff (both the page, and the fact that a female with a cool homepage submitted a story!) Some Slashdot Sightings: VinceV wrote in to say that Slashdot apparently is mentioned in the printed manual for Caldera OpenLinux 2.2. cymen wrote in to tell us that Slashdot appeared in the Mit Technology Review. No URL, but someone sent me a scan (that I can't post for they fear the Slashdot effect) but its pretty cool. And finally, for some good old fashioned porn parody, gelbardn sent us Geek Erortica which features live strip shows of Ms. G3 and Ms. Dell. (No its not actually dirty, but its quite amusing).

10 years ago -- "Competition undermining Microsoft" 74

Ten years ago, Bill Gates bemoaned competition undermining Microsoft: "Our DOS gold mine is shrinking and our costs are soaring--primarily due to low prices, IBM share, and DR-DOS." This evidence came out in Caldera's lawsuit against Microsoft for predatory practices against DR-DOS. Bill Gates goes on to say "I believe people underestimate the impact DR-DOS has had on us in terms of pricing" Update: 03/31 11:36 by S : More info at Caldera's website is quite interesting, for instance detailing Vobis' attempts at using DR-DOS instead.
