PC Magazine (online) on Linux & Linuxworld 55

PC Magazine Online has published some articles about Open Source, Linux world and reviews of Slackware, Caldera, Debian, Redhat, Gecko, and Apache. Worth a read. Those articles will be published on the next issue of PC Magazine in the March 23rd issue. (thanks to Eli Marmor for telling me about it).

Batch of LinuxWorld Bits 46

I'm still here from the floor (Thanks again to LinuxWorld for giving us a booth and Linux-HW for flying us out here). Its crazy. It's absolutely gigantic relative to ALS. The mega-stars are here in full force- Caldera, Compaq, LinuxCare, Red Hat, and VA Research each have absolutely huge booths. I've been snapping pictures and trying to talk to keep up with the email and stories from here, but keeping up is proving near impossible. In the meantime, its entertaining to note that the press room is compaq boxes... running windows. And Shayde from Freshmeat is posting updates. Wired has a bit too, complete with a terribly out of context quote from me. Anyway, soon things will calm down and I can hopefully post pictures and write up a real report... hang in there.

IBM Announces Linux Support 88

Ilya Berdnikov writes "IBM has finally announced its full support for Linux! Here's the story. " Most interesting is the comments about IBM supporting Caldera and SuSE in addition to Red Hat, as well as a bit about DB2.
Caldera

Helius/Caldera Satellite Router running Linux 34

Shag writes "Helius has a press release up on their site about the latest thing to do with one of those little satellite dishes. It's still the same ol' DirecPC technology - 400kbps satellite feed inbound, landline ISP outbound - but now they've got a Linux-powered router beastie so you can handle your whole LAN this way. " This is a great solution for small businesses and school buildings-and it's good to see cutting edge stuff like this.

MS Wins Six month reprieve on Caldera case 41

Master Switch writes "Microsoft won a six month repreive from Caldera's case against them. They initially asked for 3 months, but due to scheduling conflicts, the judge gave them six. Estimated potential damages are 1.6million if Caldera should win the case " Update: 02/19 03:19 by S : That should say 1.6 billion.

IBM Linux Boxes 56

An anonymous reader sent us a link to a PCWeek Article where you can read about IBM and Linux. They supposedly are going to announce Linux based Netfinity boxes at LinuxWorld. Says they'll support Red Hat, Caldera, SuSE, and might even be releasing their own version for the high end mega boxes.

Linux Distributions Compared 1

palpatine writes "In this comparative review, five major Linux distributions are compared, including Caldera OpenLinux 1.3, Debian GNU/Linux 2.0, Red Hat Linux 5.2, Slackware Linux 3.6, and S.u.S.E. Linux 5.3." They also mention several of the lesser known distributions at the end. No surprise that RH5.2 takes the editors choice, although on the whole, it seems like a fair analysis. Figure now is a good time to rerun the distro poll too. Break out the asbestos.

SGI x86 Linux Servers 36

I think I need an SGI icon- the news from out there just keeps streaming in- Mage sent us a link to an interesting bit from Federal Computer Week talking about x86 Servers designed to run NT or Linux. The article has a pretty glaring mistake though, saying that Red Hat and Caldera are "Public Domain" Operating Systems. Update: 02/08 05:11 by CT : Hooray! We have an SGI icon now. Anyone have one for mp3s now?
Caldera

Caldera OpenLinux Power Bundle 28

Wilson Lee writes "Caldera Systems would like to announce the release of Caldera's OpenLinux Power Bundle which includes Caldera OpenLinux 1.3 and PowerQuest's PartitionMagic 4.0. The OpenLinux Power Bundle includes complete software and documentation for both products, at a special bundle price of $89. For additional information on the OpenLinux Power Bundle or to purchase it, please go to Caldera Systems' website" Sounds like a rather useful bundle, especially for converting those last few holdouts in the neighborhood. What would really be neat would be PM integrated into the install like BeOS, but that is probably just wishful thinking...

Controversial Linux World article

LinuxWorld has an article which may have some valid points, but would discourage me from porting my apps to Linux. How many of you have had difficulties porting from libc to glibc? (Please only answer if you tried it). How different are the different distributions for your app? How much does autoconfig solve? Any people from Red Hat, Debian, SuSe, Caldera, PHT, etc are encouraged to relate their experience. S: My comments are that Ian Nandhra was one of the founders of the LSA, and that his article is inaccurate in assuming that software will be sold at a 60 percent discount.
Intel

Intel provides some online support for Linux

An anonymous contributor wrote the following: "Intel has a private website for authorised dealers, on its "IPD" program. It also sends out by email some newsletters. They now provide "recipes" for setting up servers under Linux, as well as a few other OS types. Today in my inbox I got the following: It provides a series of PDF files showing how to set up your system, prepare disks, install Red Hat or Caldera Linux, configure LILO, XFree, and installing Apache. The PDF files have high revision numbers (1.5+), some cover Redhat 5.0, and were last changed in July, suggesting that Intel's official Linux involvement has been going on for some time." slashdot has seen proof that these documents exist and are well-written: nicely idiot proof. They'd probably be useful to the LDP if Intel were to make them generally available.
