IBM, Compaq, Novell invest in Red Hat 79

Luca Lizzeri writes "The WSJ reports that IBM, Novell and Compaq are taking equity stakes in Red Hat (subscription required). An excerpt: "Red Hat Software Inc. [snip] said it obtained equity investments from three more computer companies: International Business Machines Corp., Compaq Computer Corp. and Novell Inc." Pretty please will someone find a link we can read and post it? And guys, don't just post the article contents in the comments- if you guys keep doing that I'm gonna get sued for copyright violation. Update: 03/09 09:33 by CT : Joy! stick sent us a free version of the story.

JDK 1.2, Toshiba-IRDA, LJ, Fast Math libs, 43

jdesbonnet writes "Java 2 SDK preview is available". There is a bzipped file on his site, but I did not download it. edgy writes "According to LinuxHQ, Toshiba has relented and has released specifications for IrDA so that Toshiba laptops can use their built-in infrared ports." 3fer writes " The site interactive.linuxjournal.com is now open. Anybody who subscribes to LJ can now search all previous issues via the site. " It's really worth a visit. Tramm Hudson writes "After quite a long time, Digital (now Compaq) has released fast math libraries for Linux. Many people have been using DU's (now Tru-64) compilers to take advantage of the faster routines, but this runs afoul of the rather restrictive licensing on the output of the compiler. The hope is that this signals a possible first step towards releasing the DU compilers for Linux. Possibly one of the most discussed topics on comp.os.linux.alpha is the lack of high performance compilers for Alpha Linux. There is so much computational horsepower in these chips, but egcs just isn't harnessing it... " Finally ASUGeek writes "Reuters has retracted the satellite crack story." Update: 03/05 05:55 by S : Now AntiOnline says Reuters did not retract the story, and NASA's records indicate the satellite drifted by an abnormally high amount. Thanks to Kythe.

Slashdot LinuxWorld Awards 119

You've been waiting all week for the most hotly contested Slashdot/LinuxWorld Awards (which we created this morning while nate was in the shower). The nominees were submitted by anyone who happened to pass our booth this morning, and the winners were selected by our impartial (cough) judges. Hit the link to see what you missed at LWCE.

Microsoft bid on Linux.com 240

Chris M. Costello sent us a link to a news.com article about the Bidding War for Linux.com which includes the exceptionally interesting tidbit that among the bidders was one Microsoft corporation. Other bidders were Red Hat (duh) Compaq (that makes some sense) and HP (huh?)

Batch of LinuxWorld Bits 46

I'm still here from the floor (Thanks again to LinuxWorld for giving us a booth and Linux-HW for flying us out here). Its crazy. It's absolutely gigantic relative to ALS. The mega-stars are here in full force- Caldera, Compaq, LinuxCare, Red Hat, and VA Research each have absolutely huge booths. I've been snapping pictures and trying to talk to keep up with the email and stories from here, but keeping up is proving near impossible. In the meantime, its entertaining to note that the press room is compaq boxes... running windows. And Shayde from Freshmeat is posting updates. Wired has a bit too, complete with a terribly out of context quote from me. Anyway, soon things will calm down and I can hopefully post pictures and write up a real report... hang in there.

Compaq Kills Off Online Competition 73

Scott writes "It sounds like standard offline retailers weren't very happy with being consistently undersold by online-only retailers, and asked Compaq to fix it. Well, they did. For the next 90 days Compaq has suspended sales of it's boxes to companies who only sell through the web. Compaq also ordered Ingram Micro, who wholesale everything imaginable to retailers to halt sales to their online-only customers. "

According to their press release "The final release of RealProducer Plus G2 for Compaq Tru64 UNIX operating system is immediately available as is the beta release of RealProducer G2 for the Linux platform." Ok, so it's not oss, but it is good to see. "

Microsoft-Compaq-BeOS 183

shaldannon writes "This morning on National Public Radio there was a story about the ongoing Justice department case against Microsoft. Yesterday Justice Department attorney David Boies challenged Microsoft's Windows licensing policies, particulary the "verbal contracts" not to include Netscape on the desktop. He questioned a Mr. Rose of Compaq on this subject. Mr. Rose tried to distance himself from Microsoft by claiming that he'd never had close dealings with the company or Mr. Gates. Attorney Boies produced an email in which Bill Gates specifically thanks Mr. Rose for his assistance to Microsoft on the DoJ case. Boies then dropped a bombshell announcement: Compaq had been having secret negotiations with BeOS to do some development for them. At the same time, Compaq sent representatives to Microsoft for their blessing on the arrangement. Microsoft killed the deal. Compaq's attorney jumped to his feet, emotionally denying the charge and accusing David Boies of 'cheap courtroom tactics.' Attorney Boies then produced evidence from BeOS substantiating his announcement." ZD-net and PC-Week both also carry the story. Thanks to Rick Irvine (a Furious Be User) and BitMan. In related news,Matthew Tebbens tells us that CNN is reporting that Windows 2000 will need apps to be rebuilt or even rewritten to be compliant (whatever that means). Update: 02/19 06:02 by S : And to top the cake, Microsoft has been charged with monopoly pricing in a California Class Action suit. Thanks Dwight Johnson. Update: 02/20 12:57 by S : More on the Be Story: Alledgedly, Be is making an embedded OS that would have better media capabilities than WinCE for information appliances.

YABOQs 13

It's that time again :) Saturday (not Friday - I didn't realize it was Thursday until awhile after I posted this..), the DC Linux Users group will be having an Installfest in Bethesda, Maryland. I'll be there (NOTE: I am NOT CmdrTaco), and so will half a dozen Red Hat guys. Feel free to drop by. You can get the skinny here. We are notorious for our fests. Secondly, Cowdog wrote in with a link to some cool Tux reversions. Yo quiero ese Tux! But, Tux does not stop there: according to DrMalte, his brother found some Tux-shaped shampoo bottles. Finally, phargrov writes "'Itsy' project leader Bill Hamburgen of Compaq Computer Corporation Western Research Laboratory (formerly DEC WRL) will speak about Itsy at Stanford University on Wednesday the 24th. Details available on the EE380 class page. "

Compaq Denies Being a Microsoft Victim 50

whimsy writes "A senior Compaq executive credited Microsoft Tuesday with making computers easier to use, more reliable, and less expensive." It interesting to see how Compaq has been scrambling the past few days to not look like a "victim". This relates to John Rose, Compaq official, who's the next witness in DOJ trial currently going on. The article talks a little about the history of Compaq and Microsoft, as well as some of their disagreements.

Linux Expo Names Technical Keynote Speaker 2

XP1000 Workstation 57

Anonymous Coward writes "Compaq is announcing new workstations and servers based on the 21264 microprocessor. They run Linux and they scream (specFP of 58.7). Compaq " The web cast requires registration. Hopefully, cypherpunks/cypherpunks has been set up already. Anyway, that is one fast chip, and a bit pricey, too - over US$7000 for a low-end NT model, or almost $10,000 for a Tru64 Unix model. On a related note, a friend is about to go off to college and has about five grand to blow on a nice Alpha for NT and Linux. Any suggestions for him?

Tiny Linux Boxen 61

nelsonrn writes "Two university groups are working on designs for tiny Linux boxen reminiscent of the Compaq Itsy: UNSW's Pocket Linux Embedded Box (PLEB), an Intel/ARM SA-1100 based box, and Ryerson's uClinux simm, a 1" tall Motorola/68K Dragonball-based Linux box on a simm. Both have serial ports and LCD interfaces, but the PLEB has IR and the uClinux simm has Ethernet. Both ports are booting on their respective development platforms. Coincidentally, both projects are currently laying out their boards in preparation for a run of prototypes." Update: 01/31 10:39 by S : In related news, Tarcus posted this ARM multiprocessing set of PCI cards manufactured by Chalice Technology which make for a cheap Beowulf cluster.

Dell(?), HP shipping with Linux 41

turnerjh writes "Another hardware manufacturer has joined the ranks of Hewlett-Packard, SGI, VA Research, and Compaq. Dell Computers has announced they will begin bundling Linux soon. Is Microsoft finally losing their strangle hold on the hardware industry? This is a step up from Dell just passively installing Linux on demand. It seems they will be actively pursuing our favorite OSS OS." Be careful with this one-Dell hasn't actually said they will be shipping with it-just expetected to announce it. But, this is a step-up (if true), and it sounds like it won't just be on servers, but work-stations as well. Additionally, Tom Jenkins wrote to tell us that Hewlett-Packard has announced they will be selling some of their server line with Linux pre-install/bundle as well. Let's keep making inroads, folks-this Dell thing has been in the air for a while, but a commitment is always a good thing to see.

Compaq to bundle Linux and provide support 128

emptybody was the first of you to write in with this PC Week story that Compaq is about to ship RedHat 5.2 bundled on some of its servers, and provide 24-by-7 support for them. This apparently will save time for them, since they currently pre-load Linux by hand. If this is becoming a problem, it suggests demand for Linux Servers is increasing. Gateway also expects to deliver such servers by the end of the year. Kim Brown, an analyst at Dataquest Inc, says this means Compaq is walking away from SCO, and that Linux is starting to be acknowledged as the low-end Unix alternative.

Build your own Itsy? 22

mgrennan writes "Compaq's development of the Itsy continues! The Western Research Lab (WRL) of Compaq is not only continuing their development of Itsy (a Linux Palm Top) they have even included links and source code on their site so you can build your own. It would apear Itsy started life as an SA-1100 prototype for the ARM processor. With this board and the code from WRL you can do the same. The groups latest added gismo to Itsy is Rock 'n' Scroll, a user input method for Itsy that is based on tilting and gesturing with the Itsy in the user's hand. As the user tilts it from this neutral position on either or both axes, the display is scrolled. The tilt direction sets the scroll direction and the magnitude of the tilt sets the scroll speed. Small motions due to hand tremor and noise in the environment are filtered out so that scrolling is smooth and the user can easily stop scrolling. " Somebody build me one while they're at it *grin*.
