Ask Slashdot: Perceptions of Red Hat Software 370

Yet Another Anonymous Coward asks this worthwhile question which even I don't have a ready answer to: "It seems to me that a growing number of people within the Linux community are starting to fear and loathe Red Hat Software. I read that article about the Red Hat backlash and I often see comments here on Slashdot that make disparaging remarks against them. I'm curious: has Red Hat actually done anything that warrants this type of reaction? Or are people just getting paranoid about what Red Hat has the potential to do? No, I'm not a Red Hat lacky, I'd just like to illuminate a potentially irrational paranoia within the community." So what do you all think?

Red Hat 6.0 293

GnuGrendel sent us a News.com Story about Red Hat 6.0. Scheduled to be on shelves on May 10, it ought to be announced on Monday. Supposedly more expensive for the box, but still free for download (of course). Oh, and both KDE & GNOME.

Can Linux Do it? 70

Dark Fiber writes "The AGE newspaper has a big article (great big 3 page spread) on Linux that is very interesting. Lotta questions, Lotta answers." One of the better mainstream articles- it gets distributions right, covers the GNU/Linux connection, and more.

Linus and Bill at Comdex 96

i0n wrote in to send us a Chicago Tribune article about Linus and Bill at Comdex. Has anyone rummaged up transcripts of either speech? I've seen several articles on each, but no transcripts. Update: 04/20 02:07 by CT : Knish sent us a PC Week Story on the keynotes. Update: 04/20 03:17 by CT : Ign0rance sent us Bill's Speech. Update: 04/20 03:34 by CT : BitMan sent us an MSNBC article.

Handicap Access/RSI & Linux 67

Eric S. Johansson sent us a discussion document he's written about Linux and handicap access. I've included the full text below (with permission). Given the way my wrists have felt lately, this is something that really makes me think. What do you folks-what's the work being done for handicap access? For everything from RSI to vision impairment, I think this will become more important.

LibC5, LibC6 and Peaceful Co-Existance 7

Yet Another Anonymous Coward asks this common question: "I was just wondering if it is possible to run a Linux system with both Libc-5 and Libc-6 installed simultaneously? If so, has anyone had any luck running both with a Slackware distribution? Where can I find some good HOW-TOs or more information on installing and running both Libc-5 and Libc-6 on the same system?" Yes, I know this is a FAQ, but it's something that WILL be asked. Consistently. So I'm running this one just to see how MUCH information there is and whether or not it's useful.

Linux Expo Finalizes List of Keynote Speakers 13

Stacy Doster writes "Linux Expo '99 Finalizes List of Keynote Speakers". To check out the information on who it is, click below. We're looking forward to heading South again, and being at LinuxExpo. And I licked enough bloody envelopes for the free exhibit only passes that I better have a good time.

Fermi's 2000 Node Beowulf Cluster 88

Our eagle eye Chris DiBona is stuck in Chicago this week at Comdex, but he did yell to us that Fermi Labs has announced a 2000 Node Beowulf cluster. If anyone can send me some concrete data, I'd appreciate it.

Linux Showing Up In Supercomputers 33

tomas sent us a press release on yahoo talking about Linux and Supercomputers. Talks about Beowulf and clusters as well as Albuquerque High Performance Computing Center's 128 P2/450 cluster. I'd like one of those, but I don't have $400k, or a building to put it in. (who am I kidding! I couldn't pay the electricity bill to run 128 P2s!)

Linux Advocacy Hurts 189

sundae writes "For those who are into Linux advocacy, check this little piece from WinInfo before you pointlessly brand any critizism as FUD, then attack the author and everything else related. This article criticize the way many pro-Linux sites, such as /., only whine about how the Mindcraft study was funded by Microsoft and ignored the fact that the study actually *did* happen. " My opinion is that the Mindcraft study is completely invalidated by using an optimized Windows box and a vanilla Linux box. Its that simple. I'm kinda bummed that this article fails to mention this, instead implying that the Mindcraft test was reasonable. But don't miss the point- we're our own worst enemy. I got CC'd on a lot of criticism of this report, some of you guys did an excellent job of fairly ripping the report to shreads. Others... well... didn't.

Linus at Fermi National Accelerator Lab 46

A regular reader wrote in with this bit: "Linus Torvalds will be the speaker at Fermilab in Batavia, IL, 30 miles west of Chicago, on Sunday, April 18, at 5:30 pm. He will talk on Penguins & Computer Chips with a special introduction by John maddog Hall. Fermilab is open to the public during the day. " Wish I could be there :) Anyway, I remember reading something about Fermilab building a big cluster with Red Hat. Anyone care to refresh my memory? Update: 04/18 01:31 by H : Note: This is not open to the public. The lab is, but the speech is not...so, put your keys back on the counter, and think jealous thoughts.

Red Hat's Certification Program Questioned 84

unitron writes "Nobody loves you when you're not down and out, apparently. A not overly long article in the business section of today's (4/16) News and Observer talks about how Red Hat's certification program is getting them compared (unfavorably) to Microsoft, mentions the fears of some that certification efforts will become fragmented and also discuses the Linux Professional Institute certification program plans. "

Linux/UNIX Usability Research 99

st. augustine writes "A group of researchers at the University of Michigan School of Information has started a project called the Linux/UNIX Independent Group for Usability Information. Their goal: "to couple the power of UNIX with user interfaces that are consciously designed to allow novices to become experts without removing any of the existing functionality." They look serious. " Check out the Salon article that ran earlier today-they're mentioned in there as well. I've actually talked with those folks as well-they're smart cookies.

Salon on why "Linux Needs Help" 186

Matt Welsh sent us a link to a Salon story on Why Linux Needs Help. It features a lot of truth, and poses the simple question, can free software geeks write software for dumb users? Has a spiffy penguin graphic and a lot of good points (most of which aren't new to us, but they are well written).
