Linux support for the MPMan portable MP3 player

hazeii writes "After some weeks hacking, we've managed to decode the protocol used to upload MP3 files to Saehan's MpMan, and created a Linux program to do this. The program is provided with full GPL'd source, and is available from here. This means you can now use Linux with the first truely portable MP3 player. "

Gateway uses Linux for certification tests

This week's Linux Weekly News' lead article discusses the possible impact on independent VARs if Robert Young's prediction that 6 of the 10 major PC manufacturers will start distributing Linux turns out true. An article in PC Week lists likely contenders to be Gateway (has been doing certification tests with Linux for six months, and most likely will install Linux across its enterprise server line next year, said Ray Hebert, senior manager of servers), IBM, Dell, Hitachi, Toshiba, Compaq and HP which have all made some sort of positive noise about Linux...

LINC/LinuxWorldExpo

kinzer writes " Mandrake has already submitted a comment about this, but it really needs front page notice to save folks from travel and schedule nightmares. The LINC conference in January is being merged into the LinuxWorld Expo conference in March. Anyone planning to attend the LINC show needs to review their schedule and travel plans. I repeat, the LINC conference in January is no more!"

National French InstallFest

slashtom writes "Just after their good-old-brothers (Canadians), various LUGs across France are organinizing a national installfest (sorry, French only) on Saturday October 10th, 1998. The operation is co-ordinated by AFUL (Linux Users French Association). They have sponsors (SuSE, Red Hat), and more than 15 cities will have their own Linux-Party. If you are in France, don't miss it. If you (or your LUG) would like to participate in helping to spread the word about Linux, as an organizer, sponsor or volunteer, then go to this URL. "

Will the C6 Winchip work for Linux and/or BeOS?

Greg Kau is looking for answers to this particular question: "I am building a small group of low-powered computers. I would like to use the IDT C6 Winchip *despite* its low FPU and, uh, suggestive name. I am curious as to the "compatibility" of the C6 Winchip with Linux and BeOS. Has anyone tried this configuration out? The IDT site claims that Linux has been extensively tested with the C6, but I would just like to know first hand if anyone has tried compiling the kernel, etc... on the C6. Also if anyone has run BeOS on it, I would be grateful if you would comment on your experiences."

Ask Slashdot: Linux in the Corporate Workplace?

Samantha Bonsak would like to query you all on this issue: "I'm trying to find information reflecting the use of Linux within the corporate marketplace; who is using it and for what purpose. I've been hovering around the Slashdot site for a while and haven't seen any links or references regarding this. Can you point me in the right direction?" For the most part, I think that if Linux is being used in the average corporate workplace, then it is done so on the sly, but it would be interesting to know what other corporations are actively supporting Linux (aside from the usuals like IBM, Intel, Caldera, Corel and Netscape...) - Is there a way to get such information?

Outlook-like apps for Linux?

Troy Jacobson writes in with this dilemma: "I'm facing what could be the start of a migration to NT. One major app that has been desired is Exchange, so that people could use some advanced features of Outlook (e.g., the shared calendar and contact management). Do any alternatives to Exchange exist that run on Linux?" Now I don't know if any single solution exists, but isn't there a suite of apps for Linux one can run to achieve something close to Outlook's functionality?

Metrowerks announces CodeWarrior Tools for Linux

An Anonymous Coward wrote in to tell us that Metrowerks has announced CodeWarrior for Linux. It's not yet on their website, but he got it through PointCast. It'll be released in Spring 1999 and costs $449. (Students get it for $119). Given the copyright on the announcement, we cannot post the press release. I hope they release a demo-version. update Thanks to "broohaha" for this link to the press release.
Red Hat Software

Redhat not to gain advantage from Intel info

Bob Young gave an interview to techweb in which he states that the Intel deal with Red Hat is not intended to give Red Hat a heads start over other Linux distributors. Ed: It would be great if Red Hat convinces Intel to make pre-announcement technology information available to the whole Linux development community. Rather like Cygnus, it appears that Red Hat does not depend on loans. This is good, and hopefully their prudent strategy will mean that if they IPO they'll keep 51% of their stock so that they cannot be bought out (and killed).
