GPFault writes " Urchin, a "bad-ass" website/webserver statistics application was just ported to Linux, whoo hoo! It also runs on IRIX, FreeBSD, BSDi, and Solaris... "

John Goerzen writes "CNN has a story about Linux that is very positive. They talk about the pending announcement of a "major database company" to distribute Caldera OpenLinux, and gives an interesting and funny list of things to do while waiting for 100% Java support in IE. This is probably the best mainstream story on Linux I've seen yet. "

Maro Shim writes "After Oracle and Informix, IBM will announce support for their DB2 database under Linux. Sybase and Caldera will announce Sybase for Linux "

homebrewer writes "Hey, I just got off the phone with a sales guy at Insignia Solutions. He said that there has been a lot of interest lately for SoftWindows95 for Solaris x86 and Linux. He said that the best way to sway the business decisions is to e-mail them to tell them you are interested. The issues seem to be "How many people are there requesting these products?" and "Do we price it at $169 like the Mac product or $549 like the SPARC?" I wonder how many Slashdotters would be interested in purchasing this product? e-mail for UNIX customer service is: unixcs@isinc.insignia.com " (This is a repeat of Hemos' Post, but it's probably worth repeating).

Stephane Arguin writes "The french site "Les Nouvelles neuves de Linux" say that Compaq France will support Linux on all their Intel and Alpha machine by the year 2000..." Mind you the page is in French, so for all I can tell they might be talking about anything. Update There is a quick translation attached now.

We have a double whammy this time folks, and before you turn your noses, we all know that Linux is Y2K compliant. However, since it is such a buzzword today, people will want to be assured that it is compliant. How do we go about this? Here are two questions that might help us with the big answer: George Girod maintains a Year 2000 web page at here and would like "to find good links to any Year 2000 compliance information for Linux, its utilities, and other Open Source stuff. I would like to create an Open-Source section on my page and will use the links toward that end." and chardros asks "...are there any other major Y2K issues with Linux and core applications for it? Apache, Sendmail/Qmail, Samba, RDBMS's such as PostgreSQL, MySQL?" Click below for more...

Red Hat is releasing the source for their Neomagic chipset XF86 server. This was part of their XBF project, which releases binaries of X-Servers that you would otherwise not be able to get an server for. (note to video manufacturers:release specs! this is dumb!) Anyway, Neomagic has given Red Hat permission to release the source. Very cool. I've attached the official press release after this.

Mark Wielaard writes "The following message just hit the LinuxPPC mailing list. Paul Mackerras has released a new development kernel (2.1.121) that can be used in combination with the graphical MacOS booter BootX from Benjamin Herrenschmidt. This is great because switching between MacOS and Linux is now as simple as clicking a button during startup. Read the full message in the archives. And here is a screenshot. "

Apparently its Apple/Linux monday here, as we've got an article sent to us by Marc Rigney. The link is the Thessa Source, a mac news site that is running a special thing on pros/cons/experiences from user switching from MacOS to Linux .

Nate Fox writes "Mesa 3.0 has been released. Now all of us quake fans can play without beta drivers ;)" Visit the official Mesa Homepage or else the official Mesa FTP site.

Chad Myslinsky wrote in to let us know Nick Petreley is hosting yet another Linux forum over at Infoworld. Nick wonders if the fact that there isn't a strong anti-Microsoft feeling from any of the bigger names in the community, and therefore, no one to attack, has anything to do with the good press Linux has been receiving.

Andy Tai writes "This InfoWorld news reports that Sybase, another major database vender, will port its Adaptive Server Enterprise 11 database to Linux." That's like, all of them, right? =) It looks as though this one will lag behind ports on other platforms, though.

Citrix is the latest vendor to add support for Linux. Their new WinFrame client, which can be downloaded for free enables people to use Windows software on a Windows server. This is good for traditional Unix users that need access to Microsoft Office but cannot have a Windows machine and a Unix box.

A new development kernel has been released. You will find it at the usual and the unusual places. For a list of changes have a look at the Cutting Edge site. I hope a recent aic7xxx driver makes it to the development tree soon, the 80M/sec Ultra2 rules.

David Hamm wrote in to plug ALS. He says "The Atlanta Linux Showcase is progressing nicely with 40 vendors appearing. Recently Informix, Motorola and Oracle joined the growing list of exhibitors. Registration for talks is also increasing. Register now before the auditoriums fill up! Online registration is available the website." Someone needs to perfect teleportation so I can go.

Jeff Licquia writes " The title of the article says it all: "It's impossible to ignore joy." It's a compilation of observations on how much good fan mail they get whenever they mention Linux. They talk about their NT hype a little, but also mention that you can't ignore something with such an enthusiastic following. The question at the end is the best. "

patrickv writes "Infoworld has this article regarding how to compile a Linux kernel. Nothing new for Slashdot readers. However it's nice to see a mainstream IT magazine covering this kind of issues."

Matthew Garrett writes "Squid's popped up on Slashdot a couple of times. He writes irregular articles on the state of the Amiga and his general thoughts concerning the computer industry. Anyway, he's been trying to install Linux recently. "

Slashdot reader Rikard Stemland Skjelsvik writes in with this problem: I have trouble installing Linux on a DELL 433/M machine . The distrubution i have tried is DEBIAN 2 (hamm). The machine should have enough machine resources to work. When using the rescue diskette the following happens..."

Slashdot reader Robert Edmonds asks: i am looking for an svgalib animated gif viewer. i've looked all over sunsite, lsm, etc. and cannot find any decent console animated gif viewers. zgv only displays the first frame, and xanim only works in x windows. I think something like this would be nifty! If one doesn't exist, how difficult would it be to port one of the programs already existing for X-Windows?
