John Q. Public asks: "I have done many checks with people I know personally, and on DejaNews and still haven't found a resolution to my problem. It appears, from reading posts on DejaNews, that I'm not the only one experiencing the pheonomenon. What happens is, while viewing certain PHP3 scripts under Netscape I get a "Connection Reset By Peer" message. Oddly enough, it doesn't happen under other browsers. We are using PHP 3.0.12, Apache 1.3.6 and are integrating it all with MySQL 3.22.23b on top of RedHat 6.0. I normally wouldn't think to turn to slashdot for all of my problems but it appears that I'm not the only one fighting this problem, perhaps someone out there knows whats going on." Any clues?

Point_Blank pointed us to an update on Mozilla.org regarding the state of mozilla written by Mike Shaver. Mainly it refutes some of the arguments that the project isn't "Open" because @netscape.com developers outnumber outside developers. I agree with him- the fact that there are /any/ outside developers is a great thing. Anyway, some interesting stats regarding download numbers and bug submissions and stuff. A nifty piece if you're following the project.

Wonko42 writes "The subject pretty much says it all; Red Hat is now selling its new E-Commerce server for $149.99. The server is packaged with several other programs, including the Netscape Roaming Module, Squid proxy, and Webalyzer web server log analyzer. And of course, it's built to run on Red Hat 6.0. "

Matt Fotter was one of the first to write with the news that Sun has decided to re-nege on their original promise to port Netscape Application Server to Linux, and will be re-leasing the new version next month, sans a Linux port.

Fizgig writes "Is it just me, or do they only call for standards when they're not winning? Microsoft just released their MSN instant messaging client, which could talk with AOL Instant Messenger users. AOL then changed the protocol slightly to break Microsoft's. Now Microsoft is calling for standards. And they somehow managed to mention Linux in a story that really has nothing to do with it. " Update: Around 11:30 p.m. EST, Keefesis noticed that MS had released an updated version of their Messenger client that works with the latest version of the AOL product. This MSN page has details.

trims wrote to us with the an update on the AOL/Sun/Netscape triumvirate. Quite a lot of people have written that the the products are taking the name iPlanet, but it also appears that the name Netscape itself is being dropped from all but Navigator and Communicator. The article itself talks a bit about open source movement, and how the decision to drop the Netscape name was partly because Netscape had burned so many developers.

Matt Levine writes to us with the news that the Caldera division, Caldera Thin Clients, will rename itself Lineo, and will be focusing on set-top boxes, and cash register systems. The system is beig developed using an Embedix, which is based an OpenLinux.

NoWhere Man noted a story on CNet that that talks about Red Hat and their plans to Create a full blown Linux Portal. They note the fact that RH has job openings in San Fran, as well as the trivia that they recently hired 20 (!) people from Atomic Vision. They note that RH will be competing more directly with VAs Linux.com, and of course, yours truly.

Wonko42 writes "Netscape is thinking twice about continuing to use Mozilla.org as the main tool to develop Communicator, and well they should. The project has received very little support from the open-source community, and the delays have been astronomical. While Netscape isn't sure that they could undo the open-source status of the browser, they're considering their options carefully. Also, according to the article, Communicator 5.0 is set to ship in December. "

UM_Maverick writes "According to this article at news.com, Netscape is going to replace their Excite-powered search engine with Google technology. " Heh. I use my google Slashbox a lot. Linux based search engines are good.

jonMC writes "Ok, not quite Netscape, it's Mozilla. M7 release notes are here. You can get the straight goodies from the ftp site. " The release notes also point out that the Full Circle enabled versions allow for error transmission errors back to Netscape - along with "improved crash analysis". Mozilla just keeps looking better.

paRcat wrote to us with the lastest news from MS Trial. It appears, from court documents, that AOL-Sun-Netscpe (Or, Apollo, Zeus and Odyssey as they referred to themselves) have laid a plan to make Microsoft irrelevant. Reading through much of it is common-sense, but it's interesting to see the plans laid out, including the tidbit that IE4-AOL is "the last" one. The three are betting heavily on the notion that everything runs off of the Internet-and they mean everything, pairing that with Java from Sun, and Netscape in applications, they want to dominate everything.

Bathmat wrote in to send us a story on new Linux Telephony. I'm sure most of you realize that this is an area where Linux still tends to lag behind certain other OSs. This one is about White Pine who is apparently hooking up with Red Hat to provide this stuff under Linux.

Mistress Nine writes "In order to speed up development time for Netscape 5.0, the Mozilla project is dumping backward compatibility support for some parts of its proprietary DOM, as well as IE4.0's DOM. The staff cited time pressures and compatibility issues as being responsible for them cutting this-however the browser will still be 100% HTML4.0/CSS1/DOM1 compliant, as expected. "

Rounding out a week with a lot of Red Hat news, def con cyber has written a good piece describing what a lot of you have been talking about: changes in Red Hat over the last few years. I think that this one sums up quite well a lot of the email I've been getting regarding RH. As a side note, the Slashdot feed on their portal site has been blatantly deleting all stories about them. They say that the SEC is requires this of them, so all I can say is that if you want uncut Slashdot, get it here. But then again, you probably were anyway... *grin*
