Silicon Valley Is Over, Says Silicon Valley (nytimes.com) 304

An anonymous reader shares a New York Times report: In recent months, a growing number of tech leaders have been flirting with the idea of leaving Silicon Valley. Some cite the exorbitant cost of living in San Francisco and its suburbs, where even a million-dollar salary can feel middle class. Others complain about local criticism of the tech industry and a left-wing echo chamber that stifles opposing views. And yet others feel that better innovation is happening elsewhere. "I'm a little over San Francisco," said Patrick McKenna, the founder of High Ridge Venture Partners who was also on the bus tour. "It's so expensive, it's so congested, and frankly, you also see opportunities in other places." Mr. McKenna, who owns a house in Miami in addition to his home in San Francisco, told me that his travels outside the Bay Area had opened his eyes to a world beyond the tech bubble. "Every single person in San Francisco is talking about the same things, whether it's 'I hate Trump' or 'I'm going to do blockchain and Bitcoin,'" he said. "It's the worst part of the social network."

[...] Complaints about Silicon Valley insularity are as old as the Valley itself. Jim Clark, the co-founder of Netscape, famously decamped for Florida during the first dot-com era, complaining about high taxes and expensive real estate. Steve Case, the founder of AOL, has pledged to invest mostly in start-ups outside the Bay Area, saying that "we've probably hit peak Silicon Valley." But even among those who enjoy living in the Bay Area, and can afford to do so comfortably, there's a feeling that success has gone to the tech industry's head. "Some of the engineers in the Valley have the biggest egos known to humankind," Mr. Khanna, the Silicon Valley congressman, said during a round-table discussion with officials in Youngstown.

These aren't necessarily dumb people (although some are pretty dim), but they are fairly ignorant of all things tech related.

Instead, some forces appear to have pushed us into a place where many organizations feel overwhelmed and either hire contractors (which turn out the same garbage) or just don't adopt the latest technology.

WordPress is one of the few forces pushing in the other direction, trying to democratize technology into a tool that anyone can employ.

Submission + - SPAM: Store app fix for Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld

infernalC writes: Apparently, the outage reported yesterday was caused by an expired X.509 certificate causing TLS negotiation to fail between the Store app and the servers. This explains the sporadic reports that rolling the date on the phones back to 2017 was a workaround. Microsoft is rolling out a new certificate and the Store app should be working within hours. Rumors of the store's early demise appear to be greatly exaggerated. The same store serves Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld, which is in mainstream support until July, 2019, so it's unlikely that Microsoft will pull the plug on Windows Phone until at least that time.

Not that we should cater to ignorance, and not that this problem won't go away once there are no more Boomers to hold these views. Because replacing the cooking method for the primary item on your menu costs substantially more than $60K? Consider for a moment the only change they're making is replacing a person with a machine that imitates the action the person should be doing. That's it. In this case, Caliburger is open 72 hours per week. The general trend of late is for people to demand $15/hr for this type of labor (I disagree with this but that's a personal opinion). The math here is simple. Flippy works the 72 hours per week that they're open replacing one employee (possibly more than 1 but let's be generous and assume just 1). Flippy costs $60K, Employee hours at $15/hr costs the employer $17.32/hr when you add the FICA and Cali's state payroll employer contribution. That means that Flippy's $60K cost is roughly paid for in 3464 employee cost hours...or 48 weeks and 1 day. I say roughly because Flippy is new tech, is working in harsh environment (grease, heat, abuse by the ignorant human workers, etc) and will have maintenance costs associated with it. Point is, on a simple cost benefit analysis, Flippy won't be calling in sick (he may break though), he won't be causing drama in the workplace, won't be spitting in the food, won't be stealing cash from the register but will be performing his tasks to a uniform perfection. The product will be the same or arguably better, certainly more consistent and, after 48 weeks of service, will be cheaper on the surface than the human employee option. What's interesting is how many people exclaim negatively about this development. This is just the tip of the iceberg too when it comes to reaction from demanding unrealistic wages for simple work. You can get your way today...but you just now priced your job into a category that is now plausibly doable by a machine. Vehicle assembly workers from the 1980's and 90's are wondering how some folks missed this memo. The good news is that with the burger flipper job dead and gone, the former burger flipper now has the opportunity to learn how to fix and maintain Flippy...until and unless he demands stupidly high wages for that in which case someone will build Flippy better and make him self maintaining.

They are also going to change the mix of movies, slowly, but for a while inevitably. More family/values movies will come out, short runs with relatively low budgets, just as the 'swimming pool' and blog/guts movies will be intended for short run, lower budgets. Tech is helping as more production goes all digital, but cheaper movies can move through faster, and more product is always good for the studios. the exhibitors just want fresh to keep the seats
filled.

But this can still fail. Watch for more talent to go do non-movie 'projects', try their hand ad producing what THEY think is what we want (as in what THEY want), and ultimately see the streamers keep generating good original content to keep us out of the theaters.

Change. It is good.

There has been plenty of long-term research on this topic under the name "defect prediction". It is actually one of the best (or few..) suited application areas in the software engineering processes for machine learning. You get an obvious set of training data. Record all the bugs found, issues reported, match them to fixing patches (or whatever you call it, fix locations to code in practice). Label those places/parts of code as "error-prone" before the fix. Maybe take the "after" part as an example of non-issue. Train your machine learning classifier.

It's been done for a long time. Much like most semi-academic application areas, this is again done with university-company collaboration. Because no company on itself ever wants to get into this type of stuff due to seeing little real benefit beyond your basic, easily available and applicable, analyzers, and writing those (unit) tests that you should write anyway. In similar way to topics such as "regression test optimization". Decades of slapping on it, minor improvements if any, but with creative reporting, always some Uni finding a "partner" to get funded and help them put the academics to little bit of practice, as it otherwise is not so profitable.

So here they found a better known company (Ubisoft) and decided to call machine learning AI, brilliant hype generated. Now lets have a project meeting and report to our funding agency about how we made world-wide news with our super-AI tech and globally big companies. OMG have many more millions you so good. Because the funding agency will not understand jack about what is going on there, and if they do, they will still be impressed someone made something working in some way. Which sadly is a true achievement in that context. ...

Submission + - 3 Ways in Which Animated Videos Help You in Effective Brand Positioning

An anonymous reader writes: The term “brand positioning” was, at one time, mentioned only in marketing classes and PR firm client meetings. However, globalization and the rise of consumer culture have removed this term from its technical dwelling to everyday discussions by start-ups and established businesses alike.

The reason for this transition is the importance it has gained through the years and the research that has been done to study its effects and benefits. Brand positioning, in a broader sense, is the way a product or a service is placed in the consumer’s mind. The extent of it determines how well customers will be able to recall a particular brand and what qualities they associate with it.

Brand positioning is a marketing technique that takes time and efforts to achieve as it deals with penetrating the consumer’s psyche. Recall your favorite movie, sports icon or a particularly sticky song that you can’t get out of your head. These are retained in our memory and have high recall value because they have been positioned in a certain way. We either associate them with a period in our life or with our likes or dislikes.

With the number of options available to companies today, one that seems to be gaining popularity in leaps and bounds is animated videos. Animation is the go-to technique for businesses trying to retain their brand recall value in the customer’s memory because of various reasons. Below we analyze the 3 ways in which animated videos help you with appropriate brand positioning:

1. Brand Storytelling
It has been proved by generations of evidence that our memory supports a storyline. We are able to retain information much better if conveyed to us in the form of a story. You might not remember names of popular leaders or even your anniversary date, but you could reproduce scene by scene the entire plot of a movie or a book that resonated with you five years ago.

Animated videos tap this aspect of recall and build a video around a story; a plot that has an introduction, the essential matter, and a conclusion. This helps viewers make sense of what they are watching. This is simply leveraging a lifestyle. All of us are nostalgic about waking up on Saturday mornings in our childhood for watching our favorite cartoons.

We have been trained, albeit involuntarily, to remember things when presented with a story. This is what advertisers have known for a long time and have used it to position their products better. The animated video might even have a character, a mascot that explains by enacting the script, hence giving it a personal feel. This is the most reliable method to position a brand amongst consumers for a long stretch of time. It also capitalizes on all the nostalgia points from viewers who associate the brand with their earliest memories.

2. Conveys Personality
Animation videos are customized to suit your needs. We have enough examples of failed marketing campaigns that are based off popular ones since they don’t truly represent themselves. They simply represent a well-received image. Brand positioning, however, requires precise adhering to a business’s peculiarities.

Their unique flavor should be represented in their marketing campaign and that is what will attract consumer attention. This is because sticking to your unique image gains trust amongst the public. Markets host a lot many duplicates that gain no respect from consumers and that is something that animated videos can avoid by creating a customized video campaign for you.

This means that you have a voice in the entire production process of your animated video. You have a say in the selection of the colors, fonts, and style that best represents your company vision. This depends on your brand image which is influenced by the type of business that you are involved in and your target audience.

Fun, peppy videos suit urban youth culture brands like apparel and plain, formal ones for financial institutions. Of course, this is just a rough range and your business could fall on either side or could even be a mixture of both. For example, hi-tech gadget sellers make animated videos that use both a colorful outlook while maintaining an authoritative tone. Choose your fit!

dryriver writes: Steve Jobs famously hated stylus input and believed that touching a device's screen with your fingertips was the best input method. (Video of Steve Jobs bashing styluses at Macworld 2007, the year the iPhone was unveiled: [spam URL stripped]?... ). As it turns out however, children who've grown up using smartphone and tablet touchscreens from a young age develop hand muscle weakness so severe that they have trouble writing with a traditional pen or pencil once they are in school. From IFLScience: "Experts are saying youngsters’ addiction to tech has left them utterly hopeless when faced with more traditional methods of communication. It turns out that too much time in front of touchscreen devices has left many of today’s kids unable to perform the simple act of writing with a pencil. 'Children are not coming into school with the hand strength and dexterity they had 10 years ago,' Sally Payne, the head pediatric occupational therapist at the Heart of England Foundation NHS Trust, told The Guardian. 'To be able to grip a pencil and move it, you need strong control of the fine muscles in your fingers.' One parent was even contacted by her child’s school because – in her words – 'he was gripping his pencil like cavemen held sticks.' Back in the good ol’ days, children might have strengthened their finger muscles by drawing, using building blocks, cutting and pasting, or playing with playdoh. Now, infants as young as one are too busy swiping, touching, and pinching smartphones and tablets, which, apparently, is doing very little for their finger strength. It's hardly news to anyone that kids today are extremely digitally savvy – so digitally savvy, in fact, that 42 percent of under-eights in the US own their own tablet, and a report published last year revealed they spend an average of 48 minutes a day glued to a touchscreen device. In the UK, things aren’t that much better. Toddlers spend an average of 44 minutes a day in front of a smartphone or tablet device.Technology isn’t all bad but the lesson here seems to be that it doesn’t hurt to pick up a pack of coloring pencils once in a while. Having said that, until there is a study examining the effect of touchscreen use on handwriting ability, we cannot determine if and at what rates this increase in hand weakness is occurring.

They claim it can be accurately time-stamped, but at the moment it's at the level of pseudo-science since the method hasn't been published in any detail or rigorously reviewed and tested.

Since it's not publicly available it's also vulnerable to tampering - the police could stitch together multiple recordings and simply claim the hum proved they were all recorded sequentially and you would have little way of proving otherwise. It's also very likely that with knowledge of the algorithm used you could add your own fake hum to any recording.

The symbols include two types of flush (large and small, ISO7000-3609 and 3610 respectively), posterior wash, bidet/feminine wash and controls for motorized seats. It is hoped that the international adoption of standard icons for these functions will allow visitors who can't read Japanese to successfully use toilets, which account for over 95% of new toilet sales and wouldn't look out of place on the Starship Enterprise.
