The virtual profiles of my question are the constructs Facebook (and the google) use for people and identities that are referred to by "members" (AKA users), even though they are not members. The virtual profiles can be quite sophisticated, though the reliability and dimensions will generally be lower.
Right now reading The Age of Surveillance Capitalism by Shoshana Zuboff. Mostly focuses on the google, but plenty about Facebook in there, too. Haven't gotten to her solution approaches yet, but I still favor the idea of a restructured tax system that would motivate such companies to break themselves up for the sake of higher retained earnings.
