It's interesting to see how some crimes are localized (like narcotics) and others are randomly dispersed (motor vehicle theft). I'm sure that enforcement methods for narcotics is partially to blame, but it's interesting nonetheless.

So I went camping on the Oregon Coast a few weeks ago, and had a hell of a time finding the right campground.
While out there I had an idea to make my own 'google map hack' for showing campgrounds around the state (there were absolutly no drugs -- mushrooms -- involved in coming up with this idea, I swear
So when I got home, I emailed oregonstateparks and got the info I needed to map out the campgrounds and stateparks all over the state. I want to eventually do this nat

Wow, cool. I'm always wishing I had a convenient resource to tell where the parks are (campground or not). My interest is primarily in extracting information for select personal uses. But with today's announcement, I grabbed a key, read the documentation, and had the site back up (and with a few new features) within about an hour. Their API documentation is VERY good.

Receiving no attention is the news that Yahoo also released their maps API [yahoo.net] today as well. You can read a ranty blogpost [typepad.com] from a Yahoo developer about the differences.

I'm sure they keep track of popularity of stories. Using the RSS feed to go to stories of interest will eventually give them an idea of what stories people will read / visit, and which they won't.
Or, someone could make an RSS feed that posts direct links from slashdot, so that we don't have to visit this place at all. Then again, the editors might not like that :)

That is intersting. Perhaps they will add advertising for cerain locations. They might add a starbucks logo over each of their coffee shops on the map. It would be a good way to pay for it and thus keep it free for developers.

Overlaying polygons and lines is a neat feature though. No need for using flickr to mark out areas on static maps when you can do so on dynamic maps right through the google API.
