An anonymous reader writes "Australian researchers have successfully connected a Tasmanian colony of fairy penguins to the internet. The research effort was part of the Interspecies Internet initiative, promoted by Google's chief internet evangelist Vint Cerf and former Genesis lead singer Peter Gabriel in a TED talk earlier this year."

I actually enjoy Slashdot taking a day of the year out to just be silly. In past years some of the jokes have been hysterical. I enjoyed the "achievements" thing. The rot13 though is just irritating. So much fun having to paste all the summaries into my terminal so I can read them; I just love obvious repetitive tasks.

Compared to the general web population, Slashdot has a lot more people who are paranoid enough about browser security to run something like NoScript.

IS the joke, right? It's funny to the people doing it, and yes does reveal the contempt that just about anyone has for most other people.
While I agree that the "stories" are lame and unfunny, there are several levels of joke here.
While your reply may contain a kernel of truth, let me qualify my statement: the only person I've ever seen "joking" like this - repeating essentially the same unfunny joke over and over and over - was one with IQ of about 65. And yes, he was laughing his retarded ass off, for sure.
