Facebook Introduces Emojis, Live Video (thestack.com) 70

An anonymous reader writes: Facebook has announced that it would roll out a new live video tool called Live, available immediately for US iPhone users, and expanding to the rest of the world and Android users over the next few weeks. It is also expanding the 'Like' button to a range of emojis called 'Reactions'. The 'Live' video service has had a limited testing group since December, according to Product Manager Vadim Lavrusik. Starting today, Facebook users can access the service through the existing Update Status tool, and can control the audience for the video before uploading. Facebook also announced that it will roll out an expansion of the 'Like' button to a range of emojis called 'Reactions'.The 'Like' function will now include emojis for Love, Sad, Angry, Happy and Wow. The emoji for 'Yay' was discarded after testing.

  • Not gonna dip my toe in this much stupid. Uh-uh.
  • How do you feel about "thestack.com"?
    • There is nothing wrong with thestack.com, but they aren't following the standard "submit-to-firehouse-get-voted-on" procedure that everyone else uses, are they? Either they are paying to get on the front page, or they have paid people to vote their stories in.

"The 'Like' function will now include emojis for Love, Sad, Angry, Happy and Wow."

Those are the sort of things pre-school kids care about.

    • Same age group they've always targeted. We just got aged out of it.

        Yep. Mod parent "Insightful".

I get older, but High School girls are still the same age....that does not seem fair. :(

    • Of course there's no Hate or Don't Be An Idiot option. Oh no, can't have people expressing their real opinions unless they're positive. Even a Thumbs Down Dislike button would have been more of an improvement.

In related news Facebook will prominently feature a 'Whats your favorite color?' field and use it to help you find potential new friends.

    • The only time the Like button seems inappropriate is when someone has bad news. That's not the time I want to respond with a cartoon scowly face.

Adding plain text buttons such as "Agree" or "Support" along with "Like" would appeal to the more mature crowd.

As long as we don't also get a "Pray".

For our age group, one of the text options should be "Me too!"

Yeah, I see this as expanding the number of ways people will now have to get offended at some trivial shit and start facebook fights. Yay.

(If only I had a facebook account, this would be relevant to me. Oh well.)

  • Or maybe "Facebook: A Postmortem" Now that's a Slashdot title I would like to see.
    • You're kidding, right? They just announced 1.3 billion users world-wide and their stock went nuts. You and I may not value the service but they're wildly good at what they do. Expect 3 billion before too long.

        So is malaria.

Ooooh, apply cold water to burned area, lol. :)

No. Not kidding. Fantasizing. I am familiar with the size of both their user base and profits. I am well aware that they are not going away anytime in the foreseeable future. I also believe that they are the personification of moral decay - depravity. So yes, I would like to see those headlines, even though I know I won't.

If you put a drop of wine into a barrel of sewage and you get sewage.

Put a drop of sewage into a barrel of wine? And you get .... sewage.

Now, drop a turd into a barrel of sewage? Facebook.

No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the human race. Sometimes I wonder what species actually sent 12 representatives to another celestial body. Especially when I have to drive in snow...

  • So Live is just Facebook's version of Periscope?

    • by swb ( 14022 )

A marketing droid I'm friends with on Facebook is a major cheerleader for client involvement with Periscope, so it wouldn't surprise me if Facebook felt it had to get in on this, too.

  • Why do they even bother releasing to anything else, they don't give a shit about any other platforms enough to do a simultaneous platform release even for the larger android market.

    • Maybe Facebook values the Apple users more?

Don't piss and moan about Apple for Facebook's choices ... wah wah wah ... my Android didn't get published first.

      Seriously, get over it.

Is your life seriously hampered by not having fucking emojis in a Facebook app? Do you even have the app? Or is this just whining for no good reason?

    • Is it really a "larger Android market" if you do not count the devices stuck with old Android versions? Last time I saw statistics of Android versions, only a small percentage was using the latest major version, another small percentage was stuck with the previous major version and the rest went as far back as four major versions ago. That's like complaining that my iPhone 3GS isn't supported anymore, except that low-end Android devices still ship with old versions of the OS today, even as brand-new phones.

  • Slashdot needs to allow commenters to use emoji and live video, also.

  • ...we have discovered that Facebook isn't annoying enough.

  • Much Love

    So Sad

    Very Angry

    Many Happy

    Wow

  • But will it make the Android app not suck and take up all available resources, and then some? I've uninstalled Facebook and Messenger, and now my phone runs like it's brand new. On the bright side, I now rarely use Facebook. So I've got that going for me.

    • I decided a while ago on my Nexus tablet I'd uninstall any app which was essentially just a web-page ... because I don't have to worry about ads and permissions.

A shocking amount of apps are just wrappers around the same content as the web page, and just wanted to collect my data and serve up ads.

Huge amounts of these apps are largely pointless, and can be replaced with a bookmark and requesting the desktop site.

My tablet has a lot less garbage on it, and I have less privacy concerns with apps which want to

      • A shocking amount of apps are just wrappers around the same content as the web page, and just wanted to collect my data and serve up ads

Holy shit, SAY IT ISN'T SO!! ;)

        • I know, it's a radical and wacky idea, and it will even be controversial ... but, yes.

The sad thing is, for most consumers, they just go "ZOMG teh app" and don't stop to think "what does this really do for me?".

It's like those terrible mobile sites which reditect you away from finding the fucking information you'd come looking for ... if all your mobile version of the web site is keep me from finding what Google sent me here for, your mobile website sucks.

    • I've uninstalled Facebook and Messenger, and now my phone runs like it's brand new.

I'd no more trust Facebook and Messenger on my phone than I'd trust an unattended pedophile at a daycare. (And not having a Facebook account kind of seals the deal for me, no reason at all to have it on my phone.)

  • I had heard rumors that facebook was going to add an effective "dislike" button.... I guess this "reactions" is it. Maybe facebook was worried that "disliking" something would turn into a form of cyber bullying.
  • Facebook Introduces Emojis, Live Video

"Emojis, Live Video"? Is that like "Santa Claus, the Movie"?

Just say "and" if you mean "and." Let these pointless newspaper traditions die with their medium.

  • Before the internet you would read high quality content because it was high quality. And they would continue to publish it because you read it.

Now it is too simple to measure "engagement" by counting comments, tweets, etc. Before long, publishers notice that useful articles with minor factual errors, vitriolic and gossip articles get the most engagement. Unfortunately this leads to more articles with that type of content.

This new reactions feature will be extremely useful for content producers.

  • Fluttershy was not available for comment.

  • If I had a Facebook account I'm sure I'd be jumping for joy at all the new shiny junk they just added. But I don't, so eh.

For those of you that do love you some Facebook, congratulations on the new goodies.

Keep up the good work! But please don't ask me to help.

Working...
