Tesla To Hold Gigafactory Grand Opening on July 29 22

Tesla's mammoth 13-acre battery making Gigafactory isn't due to begin production on lithium ion cells until next year, but according to a report on Fortune, the factory's grand opening is to be held on July 29. According to a report on Bloomberg, as of earlier this month, only 14 percent of the Gigafactory has been built so far. Though, Tesla is already utilizing it to produce Powerpacks and Powerwalls. The factory will apparently cost at least $5 billion to make. (Thanks to an anonymous reader for sharing the link.)

      Yes.

The completed structure will have a footprint of 5.8 million square feet, roughly the size of 100 football fields. Inside, however, will be at least twice as much floor space because some sections will stand four stories tall.

23 acres per million sq. ft. ==> 133.5 acres of basic floor area, 267 acres of floor space (counting the up to four floors).

    • Still, it's just one pixel on a map. I am so glad to see progress in the area of battery chemistry that I am making my first post here in years. Slashdot is returning to its roots, by making stories that are meaningfull get posted. It is so exciting to see electric powered everything from houses, to cars, to skateboards, not to mention all of our personal embedded systems devices. Soon, I'll be able to look at my watch and read a report about my health just as regularly as I check the weather forecast... Pa
