Microsoft Unveils Windows 10 Creators Update, Coming in Early 2017 (fortune.com) 91

Microsoft today announced Creators Update for Windows 10. The company said Creators Update will release with a slew of new features at no charge in early 2017. From a report on Fortune: The Windows 10 Creators Update lets users on mobile devices take three-dimensional photos by scanning an object as they walk around it. It also allows for 3D graphics in Microsoft's popular PowerPoint presentation software, and a new "Paint 3D" application lets people edit photos and other designs in three dimensions. Terry Myerson, Microsoft's executive vice president for the Windows and devices group, said the update was tailored for gamers who are increasingly interested in augmented and virtual reality experiences. "Windows 10 will be your platform for gaming glory," he said at a product launch event in New York.

    Isn't that nice of them?

oooh - troll moded not 1 minute after posting - I see the M$ shills are out in force.

Look pal - the point is that it's a bunch of unnecessary features used to strengthen their failing position in the market place for a Windows-as-a-service that they've ramrodded down everyone's throats and they have the audacity to proclaim it's a "free update" as if they're doing us a favor.

      They're not.

      • Unnecessary to you. My kid can't wait for this update as an aspiring mechanical engineer, and his sister, who is going into animation wants it yesterday.

They both want the new AIO too, as it ties right into what they want to do.

        Different strokes for different folks.

Why is it an OS function to take 3D pictures of things?

I want my OS to provide basic functionality and then let me decide what toys to put on top of it.

    • They probably mean just that the paint app included with Windows 10 is being updated. The line between Core OS and applications included with the OS has been blurring for a long time now. All OSes are subject to this, including Linux.

Hell, most modern programming languages do this now too. mutter mutter grumble

Because then the OS can present a unified interface for 3D scanners to applications. It won't matter if your scanner was based on dual cameras, or an old Kinect, or a new Kinect (old = pattern distortion, new = time of flight), etc. etc. etc. Any application who wants to take a volumetric image can simply ask for one and not worry about the underlying detail

You are confusing the applications with the underlying API.

The applications bundled with Windows exist in part to help the users diagnose whether the drivers work. How many printer troubleshooting guides have "Try to print something from Notepad" as a step?

    • Well, if that's how you feel about it, just delete your Operating System and see how far you get with just a BIOS. That should be all the basic functionality you can handle!

      >OS to provide basic functionality...

All through history, the Middleman has wanted acknowledgement & a fan club. OS's should be anonymous players on the digital stage, but unfortunately, like all businesses, they succumb to the inevitable evangelism of Branding and some self-induced sense of responsibility to 'help' everyone it meets.

    • This is just microsoft shouting into the wind, "We're still relevant... Let us monetize you..."

This isn't an OS update. It's a forcibly bundled app that I don't want.

    >Microsoft's exclusive vice president

Oh, you mean he's not a vice president for anyone else? Or is he a limited time offer just for me?

  • Every single one back through 3.1. Make them pay to play. I would pay good money for a Windows 10 machine that looked like Windows NT.

I don't want a poorly designed tiling window manager. I don't want a new start button.

Workaround - I've seen people use MS Win10 just to run VirtualBox full screen with an older version of MS Windows.
  • An update dedicated to gamers. How appropriate. They must know that Windows has become nothing more than a game launcher for me.
    • Thats a heckuva expensive way to launch games.
    • It'll become the same to me when using Win7 is no longer feasible. I even plan to put some launcher on start (maybe Steam Big screen mode) so that I see as little of Windows as possible.

Same here, with the one exception of the occasional Word document I need to work on (no, sadly LibreOffice will not cut it), but for that I would have no problem having a Win7 VM around.

Only update I want to see for Win 10 removes all the "telemetry" and spyware garbage...

    • by zlives ( 2009072 )

this 3d app actually sounds cool, but i will never have it (ms version) because of win10 telemetry.
the microsoft surface pro looks super cool and i am sure it actually is a good hardware product, but i will never have it (ms version) because of win10 telemetry.
holo lens looks super cool (at least from vids), but i will never have it (ms version) because of win10 telemetry.

i can get over the UI mostly because i can work around it... but how do i conscientiously support ms telemetry in this post Snowden age.

      • No argument there, the OS should NEVER spy on the user or report their software, web browsing, keystrokes, or anything else to anyone not explicitly authorized by the user.

    • You know they actually make that. It's called Windows 10 Enterprise. Feel free to run out and buy it now.

    • by Anonymous Coward

Problem is, how do you know it wouldn't put back in with an update? Now that MS has gone down this path, I see little reason to trust them in the future, even if they appear to be changing courses (again). What's frustrating is Windows 7 was actually pretty decent (before the upgrade nagging was added), had they continued that path Windows could have actually become a solid, decent to use OS.

  • Until it updates and reboots right in the middle of a match without asking you. Again.

    • Indeed. Frankly, Windows 10 will not be my platform for anything. I have already made my decision; I will continue to use my Win7 systems until I can no longer keep them secure, and then I will switch to either Linux (if it is finally a viable platform for me by that point, which it isn't yet) or to Mac.

MS used to have the best developer suite in the business. Visual Studio was awesome and much easier to use than it's competition... even though compiling things in Windows was always a pain in the ass with DLL hell and whatnot.

Linux has been bundled with the basics to develop pretty much all along. If not, it's easy to go to the package manager and get KDevelop, CodeBlocks, etc... and get all the stuff you (likely) need in 3 minutes. OSX has hopped on that bandwagon years ago as well.

I'll consider using MS's offering if they make it easier than the competition. They've managed to come from behind (I'll double that entendre) before with good offerings. Lets see if they manage to this time around.
    • Really? I thought Visual Studio was junk. It's built in help was useless, it's UI was structured badly, incredibly difficult to manage products, and it was slow. Ok, it's better than Eclipse but not better than the basic command line. Visual Studio is my go-to example for everything wrong with the IDE concept.

    • They remove all the spyware
    • Let me remove all the crap I have no use for: Cortana, OneDrive, the phone-like apps, the Store.
    • It stops pushing me to use Ms services: Windows accounts, Store...
    • It stops forcing me to use UIs designed for touch on my desktop (Settings app ...)
  • The Windows 10 Creators Update lets users on mobile devices take three-dimensional photos by scanning an object as they walk around it.

Boy, and you thought picture boards had penis selfie problems now.

The truth of a proposition has nothing to do with its credibility. And vice versa.

Working...
