Microsoft Unveils Windows 10 Creators Update, Coming in Early 2017 (fortune.com) 91
Microsoft today announced Creators Update for Windows 10. The company said Creators Update will release with a slew of new features at no charge in early 2017. From a report on Fortune: The Windows 10 Creators Update lets users on mobile devices take three-dimensional photos by scanning an object as they walk around it. It also allows for 3D graphics in Microsoft's popular PowerPoint presentation software, and a new "Paint 3D" application lets people edit photos and other designs in three dimensions. Terry Myerson, Microsoft's executive vice president for the Windows and devices group, said the update was tailored for gamers who are increasingly interested in augmented and virtual reality experiences. "Windows 10 will be your platform for gaming glory," he said at a product launch event in New York.

Unnecessary to you. My kid can't wait for this update as an aspiring mechanical engineer, and his sister, who is going into animation wants it yesterday.
They both want the new AIO too, as it ties right into what they want to do.

They probably mean just that the paint app included with Windows 10 is being updated. The line between Core OS and applications included with the OS has been blurring for a long time now. All OSes are subject to this, including Linux.

Because then the OS can present a unified interface for 3D scanners to applications. It won't matter if your scanner was based on dual cameras, or an old Kinect, or a new Kinect (old = pattern distortion, new = time of flight), etc. etc. etc. Any application who wants to take a volumetric image can simply ask for one and not worry about the underlying detail

The applications bundled with Windows exist in part to help the users diagnose whether the drivers work. How many printer troubleshooting guides have "Try to print something from Notepad" as a step?

But how useful would a graphical operating environment for a PC without even the most basic editor for its supported data types be? Perhaps that's why Windows bundles Notepad.

Same here, with the one exception of the occasional Word document I need to work on (no, sadly LibreOffice will not cut it), but for that I would have no problem having a Win7 VM around.

this 3d app actually sounds cool, but i will never have it (ms version) because of win10 telemetry.

Problem is, how do you know it wouldn't put back in with an update? Now that MS has gone down this path, I see little reason to trust them in the future, even if they appear to be changing courses (again). What's frustrating is Windows 7 was actually pretty decent (before the upgrade nagging was added), had they continued that path Windows could have actually become a solid, decent to use OS.

Linux has been bundled with the basics to develop pretty much all along. If not, it's easy to go to the package manager and get KDevelop, CodeBlocks, etc... and get all the stuff you (likely) need in 3 minutes. OSX has hopped on that bandwagon years ago as well.
I'll consider using MS's offering if they make it easier than the competition. They've managed to come from behind (I'll double that entendre) before with good offerings. Lets see if they manage to this time around.

Really? I thought Visual Studio was junk. It's built in help was useless, it's UI was structured badly, incredibly difficult to manage products, and it was slow. Ok, it's better than Eclipse but not better than the basic command line. Visual Studio is my go-to example for everything wrong with the IDE concept.
