Two weeks after Microsoft started rolling out Windows 10 Creators Update, the company has asked the users to avoid manually installing the major update. A report adds: But why? Because the update is causing problems for users. The first phase of the rollout targeted newer devices -- those most likely to be able to run the OS update with the minimum of problems -- and Microsoft is using the feedback from that first batch of updated systems to decide when to begin the next phase of the rollout. "For example, our feedback process identified a Bluetooth accessory connectivity issue with PCs that use a specific series of Broadcom radios," an executive said.

    Why can't Microsoft test the trillions of hardware configurations before releasing an OS update?

      I'd totally be willing to let them collect SOME data to improve their product assuming they wouldn't pass it on-wards but when they want to log the keyboard and shit (and likely see visited urls, ran programs, get identification data, ..) then no.

        At least have an exhaustive list of what they collect and publish where they store the intermediate results locally, so public can keep that in check. Without this FUD starts about keyloggers and web tracking that may or may not be happening in reality.

        Instead they choose to dumb stuff down.

          Without this FUD starts about keyloggers and web tracking that may or may not be happening in reality.

          (Sure, keyboard vs touch-screen possible.)
          May just be for dictionary, but anyway:

      That's why I use linux, therefore I am not surprised when half the shit in my computer either doesnt work or works so poorly I might as well not have it

      • yeah great, 3 times when upgraded my Linux it broke and I had to completely reinstall it (didn't have the patience to actually find out how to fix it after a bunch of tries didn't work), so don't go telling me that upgrading Linux is always without a problem.. I only started having problems with upgrading windows from 10 to anniversary update, and it just crapped out after upgrading to creator (reverted back to anniversary update)..

        • I won't claim updating Linux is "always without a problem." There are often some issues.

          The big difference is that everything is completely under my control. If an update breaks something, I'm very confident that I'll be able to fix it, and 99 times out of 100 there is already a solution posted on-line. And I'm not forced to take updates if I don't want to.

          Linux does require some patience and some learning. I and many others believe it's worth it. Over many years, Linux has been a positive productivity aid

          WTF really???
          Have installed Mint on 3 old laptops, no probs WHATSOEVER!
          Oh and the old scanner Wndows and Canon stopped supporting years ago, no probs with Linux! same with any printer . I call BS on your install!

          • I had no problem installing Linux, it was the upgrades (which I even mistook for regular updates as there really wasn't much difference in the announcement) which fubarred the installations.. Yeah you can call BS on my install, but it's just a fact... And a lot of people also never had any problems with installing/upgrading windows. There is NO OS that is free of problems, that just doesn't exist.

          im not surprised when half my shit doesn't work with linux, unlike windows where I actually do get surprised cause it happens so rarely

      What a PR lie, there are not trillions of hardware combinations. You have hardware and you have drivers for that hardware, they actually charge for testing. All that is happening is the incredibly cheap arse holes are using customers as crash test dummies, not even bloody pretending any more. Doing an absolute minimal amount of testing based upon using their customers to do it for free. They are just getting worse and worse, truly disgusting.         • How is that a SUPER good idea? There's far more paid hardware testing on Windows platform than Ubuntu. If anything, Ubuntu has been using the unpaid users to test and fix their own hardware than Microsoft.

      • Bullshit. OS upgrades used to be a total crapshoot of your computer even booting. I've only had one failure in over a dozen Windows upgrades (my home machine is on Insider beta builds). What they're doing now is avoiding the heartburn and pain of upgrading and finding some random driver isn't compatible. "Hey, we see people have reported that your WiFi card has issues. Don't upgrade yet." Instead of the very real experience I had several times updating an OS only to find that I couldn't connect t

    • You joke, but I remember the last Windows 10 update having issues on a bloody Surface Pro 3. The most popular of the very few products that MS should properly support.

  • I have a couple of home computers that I still can't upgrade to "Windows 10 Anniversary Edition" - total bluescreen every time after reboot. I'm not the only one with the problem, either. I fully expect Windows 10 Creators Update to be on a similar level of crap software.

    Do yourself a favor and enable "Deferred updates".
    That way, you won't be in the "open beta test" pool and won't receive feature updates until some time after release.

    Security updates will still go through.

    • Unfortunately that won't stop MS keeping broken drivers in their update db or trying to install them every time they 'accidentally' reset your preferences during an update (assuming you even found the 'don't update anything' option).

      Until I built a dedicated PVR backend and locked it down, Win8 then 10 persistently tried installing broken 64bit DVB-T drivers for 3 of my tuners. On a good day they threw warnings, a mediocre one I found out when recordings failed. On a bad day it blue screened booting. WHQL c

      • Time to give Mythbuntu a chance? Or any distro with MythTV, but I think that gives you the most out of box help. I've been using MythTV for almost a decade now, and it definitely requires tweaking - but probably less so than blocking driver updates constantly.

  • I had to do a manual install on my Dell laptop because Windows 10 wouldn't properly install the Anniversary Update. I rather not do that for every update.

    Windows 7 is a better, has more user control, and no ad servers, with less privacy invasion. You can get Windows 7 on Lenovo laptops as well as Fujitsu and Toshiba business laptops. Or if you get a desktop/tower, insist on Windows 7 from your builder (or do it yourself..it's not that hard). You could also get Linux Mint. Free, easy, privacy and no bloatware. Windows 10 not only reduces (nearly eliminates) the ability to stop updates (you can shut the service down I believe in the "Services" screen) windows updates are not reliable, some descriptions are disturbingly vague, and others are strictly to add things of no use to use, but are in the business interests of MS. Of save yourself a lot of pain..try Linux Mint. :D

      Grammatical issues aside, better in what regard? Under the hood Windows 10 runs rings around Windows 7. Better memory management, lower footprint, better security features, newer APIs, better UI, easier to use system etc. The privacy issues and update control are the only thing keeping me on Windows 7, but otherwise I desire to switch to Windows 10.

      unfortunately, the remaining lifespan of windows 7 is far shorter than the expected lifetime of a new system -- less than three years remain for windows 7. it is already off the market at retail and the only ones of those or dsp/oem packs remaining are those still in the supply chain; and microsoft is leveraging, hard, to get the major builders to not downgrade a 10 to 7 at the factory anymore (you could still do it yourself, but that shuts out the majority of customers who don't realize that).

    • Not a good solution if you just bought a new Kabylake system; MS has disabled Windows Update for Win7&8 installations running on them. There are workarounds, but it remains to be seen whether they're worth the hassle.

      I've been running Windows on my HTPC for years, mostly for the ease of playing games and Blu-Rays, but I finally got fed-up with Win10; my new HTPC runs Fedora. MakeMKV handles Blu-Rays great so far, and the games I've been playing lately either have Linux-native versions or work in WINE.

  • It auto-updated on one of my older machines and it came back with no issues, as I suspect hundreds of thousands or millions of other machines have done.

    I'm curious if the manual install is bypassing some checks that the automated is performing, thus the alert.

      I updated manually, and I like it. Some small improvements here and there, and the night light mode is very soothing.

      But I have to admit that I have not tried bluetooth. Most bluetooth gadgets are for my phone anyway.

    Well, sure, I can understand the "maybe don't manually upgrade". But then just today, I checked for updates and Microsoft said I was up to date but then shows me a message saying the Creators Update is coming and I can "click here" to get it now. If they don't want me to manually install it, maybe don't give me a link inviting me to manually install it?

    We have a few 10 desktops here and every update seems to break something new with our software. That or the update process takes an entire morning sucking ram and thrashing the hard drive. Try running a resource intensive application while this is going on... Maybe when support for 7 ends we will switch to Mac.

    Something I've run into since - I can't "run as a different user" properly anymore. My company has a rule for admins - you can't work from your admin account, so I've been right-clicking my Microsoft Management Console link and choosing "run as a different user". That quit working - now it says the super user doesn't have access to the management console, but if I actually do login with my admin account - like

    Welcome to the era of the incompetent bungler.

    The first victim was the interface, but now it's apparent that the rot of incompetent bunglers trying to cover for the experienced and competent people who have quit, retired or been driven out has reached the deeper bowels of the system.

    People thought proprietary software was immune to this cancer that is slowly turning various FOSS systems into a mess. They blamed the development methodology, and assumed nothing would ever change.

  • Sadly, I didn't notice at first because the VM booted just fine. But apparently, it nuked the network drivers somewhere along the way. I had to reinstall; I don't know if the reinstall or the upgrade to 12.5 fixed my problem because I didn't have the 12.0 installer sitting around.

  • Don't you worry, MS, theres a growing number of us out here in the "real world" who won't EVER install your crap on *our* computers.. Since I gave up the "MS addiction" in 2010, I get endless entertainment from all the new ways MS finds to abuse those who still use MS products..

  • You can't use the Feedback Hub app to reports issues unless you fully enable 'diagnostic reporting'. So unless you let MS take whatever they want from your computer, they don't really care about any issues you might have.

  • I had to revert the update as it made my computer lock up every 10-15 minutes with only a hard reset as a solution. With the Anniversary update it 'only' happens once in 24 hours, before the anniversary update I didn't have any problems..
    • You have hardware problems.
      • Yeah ofcourse, that's why I never had any problems before updating to the anniversary, or Creator.. so it's Microsoft who screwed something up why it's hanging.. I'm not the only one with the same problem, and I won't be the last.. But also a lot of people don't have any problems..

  • you're the betatester for them. They force the updates on you, so they know if it will run for the business line.
