An anonymous reader shares a report: Microsoft announced this morning that the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update will be made available worldwide on October 17, in step with a new lineup of Windows Mixed Reality headsets that require this release. "We are coming up on our fourth major update to Windows 10, and our mission with these updates is to create a platform that inspires your creativity," Microsoft corporate vice president Terry Myerson says. "The next update of Windows 10, the Fall Creators Update, will be available worldwide October 17. With the Fall Creators Update, we are introducing some fun, new ways to get creative." The Fall Creators Update will upgrade Windows 10 to version 1709 and it brings a number of new features and improvements, especially to key experiences like gaming, security, and photos. But no new technology weighs as heavily on this update as Windows Mixed Reality, Microsoft's attempt to take virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) mainstream.

Windows Needs a Segmented Build (Score:4, Interesting)
All of these trendy new features are lovely, but if you aren't spendy enough to have the latest and greatest hardware (with, probably, alpha drivers that won't work 1/2 the time) you don't need it. So how about a Windows build that's segmented - only loads the features your hardware supports? After all, Windows knows everything about your computer (and arguably you) by now. If I don't have VR hardware, why do I need VR support? That could be added later if I ever get it, which will never happen with the desktop (and probably not the old laptop, and *definitely* not the cheapo tablet) anyway. The cheapo tablet, in particular, needs to have Windows that doesn't have unusable features.

Because what you are saying is already done. Window's loaded memory footprint has been reducing with each release since Vista. What you're complaining about is harddisk space, and not some running bloat that will slow down your system.

Most of my friends use Window 10 (some computer literate, some not).
For the past couple of updates, when they were released, about half of them had showstopper issues.
There's a selection bias, of course -- my friends are probably not representative of the entire population, but a 50% failure rate in that group makes me suspect that the overall failure rate is rather higher than a small percentage.

400 million or so on Windows 10. A small percentage of those are early adopters who are testing the new version. Lets say a 10th of a percent, so maybe 400,000 pc are testing the new version, and I am sure there are plenty of problems, and tons of missed hardware configurations.
I'm sure there will be plenty of problems with the new release, and it's always smart to put it off as long as possible.

In fairness, there was one entity complaining about stagnation: Microsoft.
Microsoft was making a lot of noise about how awful it is that people take their time about moving to new Windows versions (obviously, those people weren't worried about stagnation!). Windows 10 was Microsoft's way of fixing that problem: force everyone.

This is why you should not release new features in a fixpack for the current OS version. Instead you release a new version of the OS with those new features or better yet don't bundle the new features into the OS but bundle them as a separate pack that can be downloaded.

Well if they are too tight to shell out for a pro version of Windows that lets them defer feature updates then they have to participate in the beta testing of their free OS.

With Apple making a big push for ARKit, I would not be surprised if Apple also supports and helps development for the mixed reality headsets coming out for Windows.... Probably not this year though.

Why are they screwing over corporate users with the constant updates and discontinuing support for older versions?
There are versions of Windows 10 that will no longer get security updates and we can't upgrade beyond those versions due to lack of hardware support (for reasons unknown).
MS needs to get their act together for their business customers.

But the last update borked my install of Windows so badly that I had to wipe it and reinstall. Bluetooth wasn't working right and my audio was cutting in and out.
Will DEFINITELY be deferring this one for a good month.

I mean I understand their reasoning of wanting to get "Developers!" but seriously, that's not been their thing most of their corporate life. That's Apple's thing, being creative hippie acid taking hackers. Microsoft is about corporate culture, suit-and-tie business deal money makers. Why are they afraid of who they really are?

And then there's FOSS. Their "thing" is freedom. Freedom to choose. Freedom to configure. Freedom to hack into something and make it work yourself. Freedom to have a working system at all times!
Your post is actually "très cool" but I'll dispute your last point a little. My FOSS (Linux) system works at all times. When something is wrong, it is true that I often have to take a certain amount of responsibility (which can at times be as much as 100%) for fixing it.
The point is that I can fix it. If I run Windows 10 and have a problem, I would have to rely on others, like MS themselves in many cases, for a fix. I would not have control.

I have yet to get hyped about another release of Windows 10. Still waiting for that period of time when everything works and that goes on for a year or better. I think I have wiped and re installed more times with Windows 10 then all the times with previous Windows. It's that bad.
