India Now Has the 'World's Strongest' Net Neutrality Rules (cnn.com) 56

India has just adopted tough new rules guaranteeing an open and fair internet for nearly half a billion people. From a report: The government has taken an "unambiguous stand" on the issue by endorsing net neutrality rules proposed last November, India's telecom regulator said on Thursday. Net neutrality rules require internet providers to treat all online content the same, preventing them from favoring -- or withholding -- access to certain websites, services or apps. The principle is under attack in America, where the Trump administration repealed federal laws last month, but has been staunchly defended in India in the face of attempts by global tech companies such as Facebook to offer stripped-down internet access.

    Kudos to them, then.

  • California has posted to it's twitter feed that it's "supr jelly of Ndias new net regs... but we like tots got btr env regs n e way! [several unintelligible lines of emojis]" ;)

  • Women are still killing themselves over menstruation shame in this country .... net neutrality doesn't impress me in this situation.

Net neutrality can be accomplished with the stroke of a pen. Cultural changes, on the other hand, are much more difficult to implement.

  • India has laws/rules on everything - women rights, environment, anti-LGBT (not kidding, see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/... [wikipedia.org]; however anti-LGBT laws are seldom & selectively enforced), etc. The failure of Indian democracy is in poor/slow/selective enforcement of laws/rules which it already has on the books. These new rules will just add to the existing mess.
  • I don't see on the first glance any difference to Europe.

  • I know how the left hates Trump, and we all hate the big telecoms messing with the data streams we pay for. But, the Trump administration most definitely DID NOT repeal ANY federal laws EVER. Obama tried it, and many on the left wanted to buy into it, but we have a President, not a King. No one in the Trump administration, including Trump himself has the power to repeal any federal laws.

Do not let your TDS lead you to make ridiculous statements.

Technology is dominated by those who manage what they do not understand.
