Is it odd that this occurred while the Social Media Summit for pro-Trump content leaders meeting with the President?

Kinda shows who has power over the 'big switch', eh?

Trump is making twitter a lot of money.

How exactly, is abusing a communications platform by using it for spreading lies and propaganda good for that platform?

It is much more likely to get it regulated to irrelevance

You mean Trump's aids went to Twitter, got down on their knees and begged them to take the service off-line? I thought Trump only tweeted policy decisions on the toilet? I didn't know he tweets his stupid policy disasters during meetings as well.

        • by Anonymous Coward

Nope, he had a bunch of alt-right social media people meeting with him today, so that they could compile their complaints about how Twitter was denying them access to their audience by attempting to shut down hate speech and outright lies

Apparently those are very important to the President

No they are just sitting in the news room, eyes glued on their phones waiting for the "news feed" to resume..

It would take a few days before it dawned on them that they might need to start wearing out some show leather to stay in business and it's not been long enough yet.

  • Some internet site, even if it's a big one, has temporary technical troubles which are par for the course, and this is "geek news"? no it's not, just another day on the intertubes.

    • Well what will fall under Geek News nowadays? Most of the stuff that as kids we were ridiculed, speporated as being Anti-social, and just weird. Are now rather common things the general public does on a regular bases.

      • There are plenty of fascinating new advances in all branches of the sciences and disciplines of engineering. There are changes in all types of IT work. There are political and economic changes impacting tech.

But for the moment you can't tweet your cute cat doing a cute thing.

  • Twitter has been shadowbaned.

  • It's just the new USAAF plan to bomb Iran secretly and unnoticed: Just cut the Twitter server power for their president be unable to post the attack plan too soon.
  • Finally, Trump broke something worth breaking... I heard he was on a tweet storm this morning, maybe he got carried away...

    • He certainly needs to be carried away. His July 4th speech proved he has dementia.

It was the teleprompter having issues... It's happened before you know, especially for Obama and the pile of dead Navy "corpse" men....

Come on, give the guy a break. It was actually a good speech considering, and it certainly wasn't any of the outlandish things the left was presupposing it would be before he gave it. I remember all the predictions, about how political the speech would be, how partisan, how self serving. It was none of those things and the more your side tries to spin this, the better

. It was none of those things and the more your side tries to spin this, the better Trump looks. I suggest you stop trying.

Sure. Let's give him credit for only fucking up reading a speech a little bit. Boy, that's a high bar we've set for one of the most powerful people on the planet, huh? Getting through most of a speech without calling anybody names. Fucking yay.
        • by geekoid ( 135745 )

"Come on, give the guy a break."

No, and teleprompters break all the time for presidents.

" about how political the speech would be, how partisan, how self serving. "

Probably wold have been if the teleprompter didn't break. He clearly showed he can't function with out one.

and corpsemen is in no way comparable. What Trump did was an order of magnitude more stupid.

And to be fair, The teleprompter didn't break, Obama mispronounced to and read it as it appeared.

Trump does more stupid gaffes in a week then Obama di

          • You CLEARLY don't listen to him much because he goes off prompter all the time and makes perfect sense when he does. You may not like what he says, but that's not what we are discussing.... Or is it?

And YES Obama DID misread the prompter. Are you saying he doesn't know how to pronounce the word "corps" when he sees it but says "corpse" instead? Or are you saying he didn't know the difference between a "Navy Corpsman" and a dead person in the Navy?

Personally, I'm cutting both a little slack. I'm just sur

  • Twitter is the foulest, most evil thing ever to emerge from the Internet.
  • internet is never down.
  • blip! I didn't even notice. Of course those reading /. weren't on Twitter at the time. It's odd to publish a message on one platform that another social media platform was down was down. Can you imaging the FB posts "omg. Only some of my friends will Share this Post showing they care about Twitter"

Those who actually use Twitter would have noticed. The rest of us don't care.

  • This is getting weird. Seems like every other day another large chunk of sites is having a "unexpected outage". Then it's resolved and a few days later, another group of outages for different sites. Rinse and repeat. And a lot of them are, in some way or another, communications platforms or backbone services (like Cloudflare).

If I were slightly more paranoid, I'd start to think something bigger is going on....
    • Nah, the house of cards style of modern programming and engineering is just starting to realize it's potential.
      • by geekoid ( 135745 )

        100% this.

also, there is no modern software engineering anymore. it's all pretty much slap and dash.

as an old software engineer, seeing by beloved industry being reduced to this rubbish is heart breaking.

I would agree if it wasn’t so many in such a short period of time. Since last month there are been a long string of major outages at big and even midsized internet companies. Oh and add Stripe to the list too. They went down for two hours today as well. This feels like there’s a major, currently undisclosed zero day that everybody in the know is rushing to patch as fast as they can. That or a major network exploit is in the wild. Or it is just amazing timing. Or I am getting old and paranoid.

  • Whew! I'm glad that's over. Now I can continue not using Twitter without worry.

So 'I don't use Twitter' is the new 'I don't watch TV' certain people like to shove into any vaguely related conversation?

  • In these dark times, we need more feel-good stories like this. UPDATE: Damn. It's back.
