AMD Lands Google, Twitter as Customers With Newest Server Chip (reuters.com) 57

Advanced Micro Devices on Wednesday released the second generation of its processor chip for data centers and said that it had landed Alphabet's Google and Twitter as customers. From a report: AMD competes against Intel to supply chips for data centers that power internet-based services. Both firms have come to rely on data center chips for growth because personal computer sales have stagnated as users shifted to mobile devices. AMD's newest generation of server chip, called EPYC, uses a new chip-making technology from its contract manufacturers that helps the chips have better performance while consuming less power. Intel, which makes chips in its own factories instead of relying on contractors, is behind schedule delivering chips made with its own newer manufacturing process. It plans to release them next year.

  • Don't count Intel out just yet, they have a long history of anti-competitive behavior that has kept them going this long. I don't know what tricks they are going to pull this time around but having an inferior chip didn't never stopped them from rigging the market in their favor. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they started buying up motherboard design companies just to put out loads of faulty AMD boards that burned up processors.

If you think I'm kidding or that sounds crazy then you should learn a b

    • Yep, it is good to see AMD catching up a little. But Intel still has the performance to stay ahead of AMD at the top tier but AMD has a pretty decent economy lead on Intel, but that can be fixed with just a couple of price adjustments so that still keeps AMD on some shaky ground if Intel gets really anti-competitive with them.

I am also sure Intel's ass is still burning because AMD beat them to 64-bit processing and set the standard.

Epyc Rome is good on its own but what makes this an even bigger launch is the same thing that made Ryzen 3 big last month; Intel has stagnated. A lot comes down to the repeated delays of 10nm, AMD's own people have said Zen was designed to compete with Ice Lake but they ended up going against a warmed over Skylake.

AMD should milk this for as long as they can. Intel will have a viable competitor eventually and then the race is back on so now is the time to regain market share. Its not enough for them to just be competitive if they want to grow. If its the same then there is no compelling reason to leave the comfortable safety of Intel. AMD can only convince vendors and IT departments to switch if they have an obviously superior value proposition. Looking at the published MSRPs it looks like they are taking that seriously. Its amazing how much more you get for your money with Epyc than Xeon. AMD has trashed Intel's carefully structured pricing model.

      Citation?

You dont seem to understand that Intel is fucked, and not fucked by AMD. Intel is fucked by every rent-a-fab on the planet.

The only way for Intel to "save" itself is to stop being Intel, to stop being a vertically structured mortuary slab that cant keep its FABs running 24/7/365.

All those rent-a-fabs have no trouble selling 100% of their FABs time. Being one of them is Intels way out, but that means they need to stop being Intel.

      • The only way for Intel to "save" itself

Intel doesn't need to save itself as long as they can keep charging a premium for their product. I mean Intel is so fucked they only posted a $4.19billion dollar net profit last quarter. AMD's profit the same quarter wasn't even measured in billions.

It's cool to seem AMD back with products, but they are still a very much struggling company, Intel is still very much a behemoth, and you are very much delusional.

Yeah, and remember that big companies never fall quickly. Like Kodak, IBM PC business, (Nokia, Siemens, Philips) mobile phones, Compaq - nope, all still doing just great. Meanwhile, smaller companies never get bigger, all the big companies have started right at the top.
