Teens are increasingly using the phrase "OK boomer" to fire back at older generations' criticisms. Slashdot reader ItsJustAPseudonym shares an excerpt from an NBC News article: In recent months, the phrase "OK boomer" has become a common retort in the parts of the internet inhabited by teenage and young adult users. On Instagram, the phrase appears as a hashtag alongside memes and artwork mocking the older generation. On Twitter, the phrase is hurled at someone for making an outdated statement. And on TikTok, where it is arguably the most prolific, it appears in artwork, audios and makeup tutorials as a way to mock an older generation, and the hashtag has been viewed on the platform 18 million times. [...] The phrase is a culmination of annoyance and frustration at a generation young people perceive to be worsening issues like climate change, political polarization and economic hardship. The 10 teens and young adults who spoke to NBC News about the phrase said "OK boomer" marked a boiling point for Gen Z and younger millennials, who feel pushed around or condescended to by older generations.

This is typical childish Dunning-Kruger effect where these kids believe that they have reached a pinnacle of knowledge, experience and enlightenment and "know" what's best for the world. In a decade or two, most of them will hopefully come to realise that they didn't actually know a thing and were in fact quite clueless. People from every generation goes through a phase like this (we were all young once). I'm a tail-end Gen Xer (born late 70s) and I remember many from my generation acting similarly when they were kids.
Latter-day Millennials and Generation Z are simply not old enough to be able to have valid knowledge or experience of most things right now. Give them time to grow up and watch as subsequent generations treat them with the same naivete, jealousy and disdain.

Meh, at least the boomers know better than to listen to music on vinyls. Millennial here myself. My generation and gen-z shouldn't complain about the environment either when we're the ones that are largely fueling the organic food movement, which is extremely counterproductive to protecting the environment.

Arcnet is/was a token passing network (a token ring - but not the IBM trademarked one) with a broadcast physical interconnect. All the nodes could hear each other, but the rights to talk were passed around the "ring" of all the live nodes - from the current holder to the one with the next higher i.d. (or circularly to the one with the lowest if the one with the highest had it).
Interconnects might be coax to a passive hub (four co-ax jacks and four resistors to a joint), an active hub (a repeater), infrared blinkey-diodes with the light bouncing around a room, an inter-building "hop" (using an "arclight" infrared link between two rooftops), etc.
- Tie the hubs and nodes into a tree with no loops, the nodes get acquainted, figure out the logical ring, and start passing a token.
- Turn on another node and the nodes renegotiate the ring and get right back to work.
- Turn off a node (or walk between a node and the room's blinky LED), ditto.
- Disconnect a coax (or have a heavy rain cloud come between a pair of arclights), splitting the net into two, and the nodes on each half renegotiate. Result: Two working rings.
- Connect a coax between two nets (or the raincloud goes away), joining them into one, and the nodes renegotiate. Result: They fuse into one ring.
But you'd better use terminators on any empty jacks or dangling coax ends. Too many open connections and the echoes make the error rate climb - to slow-as-molasses or give-it-up.

The new generation is much the same as the old. They want to talk a good game (now just on social media) so they can so everyone how awesome they are (so they can get laid) but don't give much of a damn about real action. They're every bit like their parents and their kids will be just like them as well and they've become the scapegoat for all of the world's problems and their own inaction in solving them.
It turns out actual progress in any direction is hard work and most people aren't willing to fail or fall short the hundreds of times it takes to get it right. Most either give up or they convince themselves that their current flop is actually a success. And since a lot of people are perfectly willing to reward talking a good game just as much (if not more) than real genuine success it's hard to fault them.

It's different this time around because the young really are screwed compared to their parents. Millennial are the first generation in a very long time to be worse off than their parents, and it's largely their parents' fault.
The problem is compounded by the condescending way that the boomers talk to the younger generations and continue to screw them over even after it's been pointed out what they are doing.

I think the thing with GenX is that while the boomers cut their teeth in fucking over future generations on us; they weren't so practiced at it yet as to screw us totally. So it was possible for GenX to put our heads down, work our asses off, and still come out with our heads above water. Most of my peers and I are doing just that; and really just don't have the free time to practice at being "woke" and all that.
The Millennials and whatever Z is called don't have that luxury. The boomers took the lessens they learned in mildly fucking over X, perfected their techniques, and put the screws to Y&Z so hard that even the opportunities that were left left for X are closed off to Y and Z. So, what do they have left to do besides rage against the machine?

Dunno if I'm a "boomer" or not, being on the young end of the possible limit. Doesn't matter much, either: blaming the economy and other problems on an entire generation is just stupid. When, exactly, did those dastardly deeds happen? By all accounts, it must have been in the 80's, plus or minus? That puts the boomers mostly in their 30s - so that means that all the really senior positions were still occupied by previous generation.

I can also point out that 60-70% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. The numbers are a little fuzzy depending on if you consider $1000 in the bank as "not living paycheck to paycheck". Americans are also awash in debt. $1 trillion in studen loan. Another 1.22 trillion in car loans and $13 trillion on credit cards. Unlike National Debt (which we either owe to ourselves or, in the words of Emo Phillips, spent on all these bombs) personal debt matters.
Our entire economy is a house of cards. This is why it collapses every 10 years like clockwork. Then a few lefties get elected, try to right the ship, get it barely functional and hand it back to the mega corps so they can capsize it again. And every time we repeat the cycle those lefties have been a little less left and a little more corporate.
I keep posting it because it's true. It's real. All of it. You've probably gotten lucky. Bought a house before the prices shot up and AirBnB + foreign investors drove up costs to beyond what you can afford. Or got a nice job in a dead end city where houses are cheap and didn't get your work outsourced. No major medical bills, no cancers in the family or if there were they died before the insurance ran out, nobody with type-1 diabetes and $3k/mo in insulin , etc, etc.
The shit's about to hit the fan again. Maybe it won't touch you. And that's the thing about "OK Boomer" (to bring the conversation back to TFA). Boomers walked away Scott free from the mess they made. Gen X and Millennial have been pointing this out for at least a decade now. My kids a Millennial and the 2008 crash changed her. It's Eerie. I've heard people older than me liken her generation to the one that lived through the Great Depression. Always afraid of losing everything. No real hope for the future. Scared. People like that do things. They start wars. If you're not careful (and lucky) you'll get dragged into it too.

This. I'm a millennial but graduated young (2002). Sure I missed the dotcom boom, but the economy I walked into with an engineering degree offered plenty of decent jobs, dirt cheap housing, cheap cars, oh, and student fees in my country only really kicked in during my last year so I didn't have a student loan. Almost everyone in my class worked engineering jobs during holidays and these paid pretty well at the time and meant by the time you graduated you had nearly a year of industry experience.
Looking back now it was unbelievably good. Maybe a little boring overall, but just unbelievably good. You barely had to think and you'd fall into a decent career path and a nice place to call home. Folks at my school who dropped out before university and went to get factory jobs found themselves in decent homes with nice cars before I finished studying (ok, they aren't doing so well now sure).
Unfortunately I decided to start my own business a few years later, which went okay. We made quite good money, but we didn't buy houses (hard to get that mortgage when you are self funding a startup). So now, despite having worked really hard, taken a risk and made a LOT of sacrifices along the way, I am stuck in rental accomodation, with a sizeable deposit that is slowly being eaten up by inflation. The money I made from the business is nothing compared to those in my class who bought a couple of homes and sat tight.
But at least I had a bit of a leg up at the start (no student debt). For those graduating now it just looks absolutely dire. At best you can take your engineering degree and go become a mindless drone working at the heart of the cancer that is causing all this (finance) and at the end of your 80 hour week you'll be able to rent the flat that you'd have been able to buy on a normal salary if you'd been born 20 years earlier.
I have a couple of kids now, and I'm working like crazy to build up another business so that they get a leg up. I find it abhorrent that it has come to this, as I really hated all the privilege-opening-doors thing that exists in the world. But in the end I've realised how short life is, and I don't want them to spend the best years of their lives dragging themselves out of debt serfdom and stressing about how they are going to do anything but be a worker drone with the precious gift that is life. I'll make sure they can graduate debt free and pursue a career that offers fulfilment and is useful to society (which these days correlates with poor pay).
Capitalism is ultimately just a game. I think it is actually quite a good game when done right. But the whole risk/reward equation has been turned upside down over the last few decades and all the correct incentives are gone. Until this is fixed (if it can be fixed) we are in for a pretty bumpy ride.

Indeed, my slacker GenX fingers are worn out trying to protest the very policy decisions that screw us economically. Whilst it is a lot easier to complain on an internet forum than to write letters to politicians I can only hope that millenials start to become more aware of the issues boomers have created for us. Maybe ok boomer is one of those signs.

I think millennials have a right to be pissed off with their parent's generation, I see millennials being ridiculed for being feminized the same way GenX was ridiculed by boomers for being lazy slackers. Boomers project the consequences of their entitlement to resources of society on to the generations who are denied access to those resources. If you look a little deeper though, you will see that boomers behave this way because they were dependent on a generation who bought the trauma of world war 2 home with them and told they could have everything in an age of plenty that was only temporary. It's no excuse for them to be so selfish however gaining an understanding of what motivates them helps a lot when you have to interact with them.
Boomers haven't woken up to this because for them to do so would mean facing the kinds of hardships their parents promised them they would never have to face. Sharing is something their solipsism will never let them do.

I grew up when most Depression era babies (my parents were born in 1924 and 1926) were still in the workforce and that generation were nothing like what you describe. It's not going to create success but it can be incredibly frustrating to hear somebody else go on about how they achieved entirely different results with entirely different premises. For example, early in my university years it was the dotcom boom and companies where jumping all over us to give presentations with free food and offer summer jobs. When I graduated it was the middle of the dot-bust and the tumbleweed was blowing. It wouldn't be very helpful or educational to hear about how easily you got a highly relevant, high paying job in 1999 and if it came with a side of snark like it's my fault I couldn't do the same I'd tell you to shove it.

Go deal with some 5 years old for a while, and try not to push them around or be condescending. It's incredibly difficult - they're relatively powerless, ignorant, and emotionally transparent, and lack your experience and perspective. Letting them make important decisions for you is a recipe for disaster.
Now recognize that perspective never really goes away. The power gap fades, and there's a lot of variation in the speeds at which individuals learn and develop, but it'll always be rare that you encounter someone twice your age who credits you with with as much wisdom as themselves. And in a lot of ways it's justified.
Of course, there's usually no less self deception and ego-defense as in teens, and idealism has been ground down into quiet practicality by hardships and rewards alike. So sometimes you're in the right.
But that's not the way to bet.

I don't think users of Instagram, Twitter and TikTok are in any position to criticise anyone. In fact, I think these people need to take a good long look at themselves and consider what it is they're doing with their lives. Tip from an older person - posting TikToks of yourself behaving like an idiot isn't productive, fulfilling or useful, and it isn't going to forward your career or improve your life.

It has always been the case that the current generation has thought the next generation is useless, but this is the generation when we're actually right. I don't know what it was like in the 1750s or something, but it sure seems like in the last century every generation gets somewhat caught up in its own identity, victimhood and the desire to blame older generations when young and then defend and promote them when older and attacked by their successors.
It's almost a cliche anymore. Will I have to wait for another 20 years for Gen Z++ or whatever they will call it to be named and start griping? Who will they blame, Gen X or Millenials?

I can't decide if this generational antagonism is some kind of evolutionary biology dynamic, perhaps some kind of Oedipal complex, or maybe some herd instinct for the perils of our continued existence.

For real? I mean the boomers had legitimate complaints about the previous two generations before them. *Literally* supporting mass segregation and Jim Crow laws, criminalizing unions and fair wage/work laws, passing Prohibition, inventing and using chemical weapons, actively working against women's right to vote.

Most degrees awarded are in fields where useful work is done. STEM mostly. Then business and accounting. And Law (everyone hates lawyers until one saves their ass). There are very, very few useless degrees. If I stretch the definition of "useless" to include history, art and maybe throw in education I might get that figure up to 20%. 25% if I include the guys with communications degrees, but then I've got to pretend they're all jocks and ignore the ones that went into marketing.
That leaves 80% of degrees as "useful".

Just because a degree is useful doesn't mean it's a good idea to get it. Take law degrees for example - most lawyers are underemployed because the number of law school graduates exceeds the economic demand for them. Sure, they'll get $250 an hour, but how many hours are they spending doing nothing? May as well be a gender studies degree, unless you're really good at it. The same applies to some STEM degrees.
Some jobs need no degree at all to be gainfully employed, provided the economic demand is high relative to the number available who can do that work. In many areas, there's a big shortage of electricians. You don't need a degree to become an electrician, usually you can do an apprenticeship that pays you while you learn. For many IT jobs, all you need is a certification, though a degree helps. And even then, just get an associate's degree at a local community college related to your certification. You won't go into any meaningful debt paying $80 per credit hour and pirating your textbooks.
