Since it was founded in March 2006, there has been only one type of post possible on Twitter: a tweet. But starting today, the 280-character post is being joined by an ephemeral South American cousin: the fleet. That's what Twitter is calling these new, more fleeting tweets -- posts that appear in a separate timeline above the main timeline for 24 hours before disappearing. From a report: In other words, yes, Twitter is finally doing Snapchat Stories, and the implementation looks nearly identical to Instagram's version of the feature. "Twitter is for having conversations about what you care about," Mo Aladham, a Twitter group product manager, said in a blog post. "But, some of you tell us that you're uncomfortable to tweet because tweets are public, feel permanent, and have public counts (retweets and likes). We want to make it possible for you to have conversations in new ways with less pressure and more control, beyond tweets and direct messages. That's why starting today in Brazil, we're testing fleets, a new way to start conversations from your fleeting thoughts."

Yeah. They may announce that ephemeral tweets are for when "you're uncomfortable to tweet because tweets are public, [and] feel permanent..."
--but merely having what you post deleted from the twitter-server doesn't mean that they go away. Anything you don't think should be public and permanent, you'd better not tweet in the first place.

If it wasn't that important in the first place no one gives a shit if it was a tweet, fleet, or some other pointless feat.
If it had an impact on culture then chances are some one else will just repeat it.

It's not designed for anybody who is somebody, it's for people who aren't being routinely logged.
There are services that delete old tweets automatically for you already. Very handy if you are thinking of running for office.

Exactly.
Hell, people try to do it today when they delete their tweets and or delete their account. People still capture it - usually in the form of screenshots, as that's easiest especially on mobile. (And as much as snapchat tried in the early days, they couldn't prevent people from capturing screenshots of the images - even finding flaws like how the app cached the images and recovering it from there).

So part of the reason why this works so well for Instagram is that stories relieve you of the tyranny of quality. Most people use Instagram to post NICE pictures, and they spend time and energy on the framing and cropping and filters, and that takes time. Stories are quick and they disappear, so you never have to worry that a kind of mediocre picture is going to mess up your nicely curated permanent record. Usually, the posts are a little more timely, and a lot less important. If nobody ever sees the story,

Twitter sucks ass for conversation, but self-destructive tweets in the main timeline would be useful for folks who do live streams/shows/podcasts to put out an announcement without having to delete it later (as the tweet would be as useful as a torn ticket stub after the event has ended, and might cause confusion if left around.)
