Pepper Spray Sales Soar On Amazon (bloomberg.com) 362

The unrest following the death of George Floyd has prompted Amazon shoppers to buy pepper spray for self-defense. According to Bloomberg, "a $9.48 canister of Sabre 'max police strength' pepper spray shot up to the top-selling rank in Amazon's sports and outdoors category Monday morning." The No. 2 spot was a neck gaiter, which can cover the nose and mouth. From the report: One Amazon shopper named "Bill" left a 5-star review for the pepper spray May 31 and said "Put the cops down when they mess with you." People are swapping recommendations for self-defense products on social-media platforms like Twitter, where users are posting links to Sabre pepper spray on Amazon. According to customer reviews, the pepper spray can be used for self-defense. Amazon became a pipeline for household essentials such as toilet paper and disinfecting wipes for shoppers hunkered down at home to avoid contracting Covid-19. The spike in pepper spray sales shows how protests around the country are influencing consumer demand. Amazon's best-seller product rankings provide a real-time gauge for sudden swings in consumer demand.

Someone _really_ wants this to turn violent, far beyond the flashbangs and pepper spray. Fuck around and find out, I guess. Trust fund provocateur kids are about to do that. FWIW, I did not bother with pepper spray. Instead I loaded all the mags, just in case someone decides to loot my neighborhood. Castle doctrine and all.

Or common people just want some means to defend themselves. As the past few nights have shown, when it comes down to it the police are not always going to be there to defend you. Pepper spray may not completely deter someone intent on causing you harm, but it may buy you a few more seconds so that you can get away.

The black bloc types that are out to cause violence aren't stocking up on pepper spray. I doubt they're buying their bricks and gasoline from Amazon either.

There have been multiple reports of some very fishy things, reported by protesters themselves, such as stacks of loose bricks distributed around cities in various places.

Sure, but the "war" will be over the day it starts. Social order will be restored. The national guard is good at this. Big city police are better at doing it without killing anyone, they can be really slick with riot control measures they've practiced and street layouts they know well. More violence works when your opponent is a single person with no friends and nobody that cares about him or her. In all other situations, it just pisses the opposition off even more.

The problem is that the police cannot be trusted. They have proven this over and over again. Lawyers have sites on the web telling you "Don't talk to the police, even, or perhaps especially, if you're innocent."

Big city police aren't good at anything. Like most bullies they are bumblers. That is why they had to take a job where they can dominate and even murder people without repercussions. They cannot even shoot well and that is the one thing you would expect them to be able to do.

They would get killed off very quickly in any other street gang and they would not last long in any civil war. Especially since so many citizens would love to murder them like they are the LCPD. They are the Nazis of the modern age and

It's happened before. It's why police departments have different layers, whether city, state, or federal, so that one can be called in to arrest the other as and when abuses occur. It's also why the National Guard can be used to compel police departments that don't live up to their responsibility, and why the National Guard escorted black children to white schools in the 1960's.

        • by gweihir ( 88907 )

Pretty much so. Let's hope the ones in command remember that the absolute worst thing you can do in a civil unrest situation is to start shooting the protesters. The guy that currently tries to be in charge of the US overall certainly does not know this...

Over the past week or so, it should have become readily apparent that one does not even need to threaten police in any way for the police to self-justify beating the shit out of you, pushing you into fire, using pepper spray like it was an air freshener, shooting you in the head with rubber projectiles or even shooting at you WHILE YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN PROPERTY FOLLOWING THE RULES OF A CURFEW.

      Here's the thing.

In Tennessee, under statute attacking a cop with a weapon is perfectly legal (and explicitly stated) if he's using "excessive force". The self-defense statute actually has a section specifically dealing with this.

I agree. However there is a lot of footage out there of the police attacking journalists and cameramen, often live on air, who are thus very clearly not part of the violence.

As a result I entirely believe that the police are also attacking peaceful protesters, and people that are in proximity to violence but not participating.

Yes and the end result is that both the media and politicians in pro-riot cities will essentially be canonizing any rioters killed or seriously injured when that happens. Which in turn will just embolden the rioters, who are pretty much all antifa-loons, and cause new flare-ups where the riots had previously been broken up.

      • The name molotov cocktail actually comes from the Finns in the Winter War against the Soviets. It was a knock on Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov, the Molotov-Ribbentropp Pact, and Molotov's propaganda that the Soviet aircraft over Finland were dropping humanitarian aid, not bombs.
