Google is planning to launch its Pixel 5 smartphone, a new Chromecast, and a new smart speaker later this month. From a report: Google has started inviting members of the media to a special event on September 30th, promising new hardware. "We invite you to learn all about our new Chromecast, our latest smart speaker, and our new Pixel phones," reads the invite. Google already confirmed its plans to launch a Pixel 5 later this year, complete with 5G connectivity. The Pixel maker revealed its launch plans alongside the introduction of the Pixel 4A last month, promising 5G versions of the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4A in the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia.

I'm really hoping the Pixel 5 offers a good upgrade path for me. Main worry is that it's too small, no sign of an XL model so far.

That's precisely why I'm not planning on upgrading from my Pixel 3 XL.
The specs say that coming from the SD 845 in the Pixel 3 XL to the 765G in the Pixel 5 would likely make no difference for me.
I really like the 6.3" screen on the 3 XL though. Buying a Pixel 5, for me, would be downgrading for the bargain price of $699.
Oh well, I've still got a year of updates on my current phone. Maybe they'll realize there is a market for the larger phone after all.

I might get a 3 if the 5 is no good. Considering OnePlus but the camera isn't up to scratch.

Can't buy them new anymore, although you could probably get a really good price if you can find one refurbished. In my opinion, it's an outstanding device, even if it is a couple years out of date.

My wife has to get a new phone, the one she bought in late 2018 was a gigantic mistake and is falling apart. The OnePlus 8 Pro is one of the phones I've suggested to her.

The OnePlus 8 Pro is supposed to be a lot better with the Google Camera app but I haven't seen any professional reviews of that set up.

I wish. If it's anything like the last Google speaker I got, it's not smart enough to replace a mentally special-abled 5-year-old.

Why upgrade? (Score:2)
To device makers: I'm looking for groundbreaking or earth shattering at this point. Small upgrades aren't worth it. I'm not spending money unless my device dies. I want new stuff like sub-inch accurate LIDAR, lasers, replaceable batteries, memory slots, astrophotography tracking, infrared cameras, replaceable lenses, pop-out tripods, etc.
Otherwise, why upgrade? 5G is going to be years before it is available in most of the country. I'm not in a huge metropolis, so likely there's little benefit here for ages
