Elon Musk's Tesla Tequila Will Run You $250 a Bottle (techcrunch.com) 142

A Tesla-branded tequila, which is being described as a "small-batch premium 100% de agave tequila anejo made from sustainably sourced highland and lowland agaves," is now being sold on the automaker's website for $250. It comes in a handblown glass bottle shaped in the electric charge symbol. TechCrunch reports: The tequila first popped up in April 2018 when Musk tweeted a photo of himself passed out against a Tesla Model 3 "surrounded by 'Teslaquilla' bottles, the tracks of dried tears still visible on his cheeks." In the photo, Musk is holding a cardboard sign that reads "bankwupt." Later that year, Tesla filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to trademark "Teslaquila."

      • Nah. I don't like drinking tequila neat, or on rocks. For that, I'd prefer a smooth scotch. I like Margaritas, and have used all manner of tequilas in them. My very good friend on the other, drinks it on the rocks. He will also enjoy it. Lately, Ive been adding a splash of ginger beer. I really like it.

Using a top shelf tequila in a margarita is like using a single malt scotch in a manhattan. The result won't taste any better than if you used any inexpensive but decent spirit, and the mixers will obliterate the unique character you paid for.

If you're paying more than $50 for a 750ml bottle of tequila you should approach it like a fine whiskey. You sip it straight, taking your time, and you'll get what you're paying for. If you're going to down a shot like a frat boy or mix it with fruit juice, you can sav

As a "Tesla Tequila" it's worth whatever people are willing to pay.

As a drink? I doubt it. Tequila is supposed to be a young, fresh drink. That's the reason you won't find 18-year-old tequilas in any store. The fact that this is stuff is an añejo (=aged for a year in wood) already shows that they don't really get tequila.

Bottom line: If it's not been aged for 18 years under controlled conditions with regular tastings then there's no reason it should cost $250 a bottle.

You want wood taste? Drink scotch, not tequila.

(preferably something from Islay, or a highland single malt)

        • I usually drink cognac when I have money to blow, or calvados when I can get to the store further away that stocks it. I have been wanting to try more scotches, though. Is there anything fitting your description that would be widely distributed to small liquor stores? The only one I've tried so far was the Glenlivet 15-year, which was nice, but kind of indistinct.

        • As tequila is my drink of choice, I've been noticing the market is pushing towards extra anejo with almost no limit to how long they'll age it. IMO, the longer tequila ages, the more it turns into bad scotch. I'm with you - Tequila is intended to be young. Personally, I like a reposado which adds some woody warmth to the flavor and knocks off some of the rough edges of the blanco. Another note - stop pouring the tequila over ice and shooting it. If that's your interest, stick to paint thinner. Tequila

I also know nothing about tequila, so I did a Google search, and found this article about expensive tequilas. We can ignore the silly ones at the top of the list, with silly expensive bottles (the #1 product literally has a bottle made of platinum and diamonds)... looks like #13 is $350 and #14 is $250. Nobody uses a cheap junky bottle when selling a product at that price point, but I think the point of those two products really is the booze and not the bottle. So if Teslaquila is of similar quality then perhaps the price is reasonable within its intended market segment.

The article describes this product as a top-shelf tequila, and it comes in an unusual lightning-bolt shaped bottle. Seems to me that this will probably sell.

But also: keep in mind that Elon Musk managed to sell [boringcompany.com] propane gadgets remarkably similar to weed-burners for $500 each by making a joke about flamethrowers. He has a touch of genius at marketing things. I wouldn't bet against him on this.

It is possible this agave comes form a particular farm being purchased exclusively for this line, but the process is going to be the same basic one that the manufacturing facility makes, which also makes other Tequilas. • In that case I see it being less justifiable, comparatively, than a $200 bottle of XO cognac. Those are aged a minimum of 10 years, but a lot of them contain portions that are 20 years or more. And I can't imagine the designated growing region for agave being any smaller than cognac, it's pretty tiny. Producers are already unable to keep up with demand, they are having to ration it globally, allocating a certain number of bottles for Asia, a certain amount for America, etc.
