Election-Related Misinformation on Social Media Still 'Readily Viewable' - If It's In Spanish (nbcnews.com) 44

NBC reports that social media crackdowns on disinformation have been less consistent if the content isn't in English. One example? "Facebook and YouTube have taken steps to remove QAnon content in English from their platforms, but experts warn there is still a vast amount in Spanish." The misleading, false and conspiratorial claims that are circulating in Spanish about the outcome of the election are readily viewable on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, despite policies from all three companies prohibiting or restricting the spread of conspiracy theories and election-related misinformation. According to researchers interviewed by NBC News, the policies have been implemented with more consistency for content posted in English...

"Facebook and YouTube have taken steps to remove QAnon content in English from their platforms, but there is still a vast amount available in Spanish and it's easily accessible," said Flavia Colangelo, a researcher at GQR, a Democratic research firm that advises campaigns on Spanish-language disinformation...

Alex Joseph, a spokesperson for YouTube, said the company has policies against misinformation about how to vote but does not prohibit content that forwards false views about the outcome of the election. "Expressing views on the outcome of a current election or process of counting votes is allowed under our policy," Joseph said. "Our policies are global, and we apply them consistently across all languages and regions."

Spanish, Bulgarian, Serbian, Ukrainian, Russian - I can read all of them. The deluge of sh*t continues unabated and that includes screenshots of English text travelling as images. Filtering is English and English text only. So the whole system is one massive fail.

Similarly, the deluge continues on Telegram in all languages - including English. While Trump channel there is sub-100K subscribers, it is capable of broadcasting all the sh*t which Twitter drops at present. So if you want to see all the lunacies peddled by the Orange baboon, Telega is your place to do so. Looking at the last 3-4 posts he should share the address of their election HQ hallucinogen suppliers.

    • Misinformation?

This is a site here [controlc.com] that shows 10,000 names of dead people that voted in one county in Michigan.

You can test it by running any of the names and DOB against the Secretary of State website here [state.mi.us] where you can track the absentee ballots.

You can test the dead names actually died by cross referencing them against the Social Security Death Index which you can search here [genealogybank.com].

      Misinformation? Riiight. Thats one county.
      • You better alert the AP instead of slashdot then!

        • Yes because the AP is not biased (rolls eyes)
          • How about Fox then? I have no doubt they would investigate.

            • The New York Post was banned from Twitter for a full week for reporting on the Hunter Biden story, which was backed up by award-winning progressives/whistleblowers including Glenn Greenwald and Chris Hedges.

It's easy to laugh at sensational conservative reporting, but let's not downplay a very real issue: partisan suppression of leaks and the sensationalizing of stories. Just because a story doesn't serve your political interest doesn't mean it warrants suppression. Just because a leak is dropped by a forei

              • You didn't answer my question. If it were true then don't you think Fox would be running it non stop? Twitter can ban whomever they please. The New York Post is a fucking news publication. They are their own mouthpiece.

                • 1. I'm not OP
                  2. Why would Fox run something credible? They appeal to short-term emotion, not long-form data
                  3. You still haven't demonstrated that under-reporting of certain credible stories isn't an issue in the mainstream media
                  4. I'm not sure what point you are trying to make in this thread

Voted or were just registered to vote? Ahhh yes, we see you pretend not to understand the US voting system. The question is, why did GOP have a list of 14k+ dead people and fail to deliver that to the states so those people could be deleted from the electoral role? I think we can guess that you thought you would be able to use them to vote but then discovered it's not as easy as you thought.

        • If you actually run one, you will see the absentee ballot received. Who filled it out and who mailed it? Laziness is no excuse not to read the directions to see for yourself. Also, the GOP didnâ(TM)t have this list. The county did
          • At least in the case I have checked, the people you have listed are name / date coincidences. If you run one you will find that quite often the zip code on the person does not match because these are not the same people. On any given day, multiple people will be born with the same name, more than you would expect since names go in and out of fashion. Note that the death check site you have given does not allow checking of the SSN so you can't tell when a different person with the same name and date of bi

            • The zip code is the qualifier. It doesnâ(TM)t happen in the same zip code. To say otherwise is disingenuous. One? Sure. 5 times. Ok wow. 10,000? Next you will tell me 136000 also all voted for Biden unanimously in one go. Statistically damn impossible.
              • You need to look up the birthday attack. Given that other Cyberax here has actually shown that specific people on the list are alive [slashdot.org], you already know that your list is somehow fake so the fact that you are trying to defend it shows that you are an enemy of America. What I can think of is that, since there were incidents where both of them managed to hack into and steal the voters register, the list is generated by either China or Russia and so you it's reasonably likely that are actually acting as an agen

So I did just that. "Helen Zukowski, birth month 7, birth year 1918, ZIP 49301" and she indeed voted! Fraud! Elections! Blahblah!

Well, the issue is that Helen Zukowski is actually alive. She has several siblings and some of them survived to 90+ age! That's some pretty good genes. You can check that yourself in SSDI (Social Security Death Index).

I also checked Rose M Zabawa and she also appears to be alive.

ROFL. And even if it were true, in any given month, about 8,000 people die in the state of Michigan. Having 10,000 people submit a ballot and then die before the election seems higher than you would expect, but only by about a factor of two, and only if you ignore the fact that many of the absentee ballots would have been sent by people living in other states. Once you factor that in, 10,000 seems entirely plausible.

as I found out a few weeks ago, some states allow the votes of a person who dies after voting, but before election day, and other states dismiss your vote if you die before election day. Michigan is one of those states that deny your vote if you choose to die before the election.

    • My friend posted on Facebook a screenshot of an election fake news tweet (in order to mock it). I was impressed to see that Facebook added a misinformation notice for my benefit. Pretty good AI to identify the screenshot as well as the real thing...

  • "Expressing views on the outcome of a current election or process of counting votes is allowed under our policy," Joseph said.

Nice of our Big Tech overlords to be so permissive.

  • We are are truly living in a dystopian nightmare where truth is hidden away, discourse and meaningful discussion are forbidden and lies are peddled to the masses as fact.
    • You mean private companies choosing what is said on their websites? Even slashdot does that. Head over to voat.co if that fits your opinion better.

      • Silencing opinions that don't adhere to the pre-approved hive-mind thought process is editorial in nature. They now have become publishers and should be treated accordingly.

What's your position on net neutrality? Shouldn't private companies be able to throttle whoever they want? How are we at this point where people like you are so willing to defend large corporations which are in fact censoring information that is legal speech?
        • There are laws protecting net neutrality. I don't see any laws requiring facebook to publish everything that is posted.

My nickname is Joe2020, because my real name is Joe and I've created the account this year at the start of the pandemic during the first lockdown. I am not Joe Biden, I am not related to him, I am not affiliated with the Democratic party, nor does my name have anything to do with him or the US election. In fact am I not even an American citizen and thus not allowed to vote in the US. This is entirely a coincident.

    • Mr President! Gosh, what an honour. Don't worry, your secret's safe with us. We'll act completely natural from now on and definitely nobody will do you any special favours expecting something in return. BTW, do you think you could see your way to including a small swimming pool subsidy for Sedona Arizona in your next Military Appropriations bill? We have a guy who was a former Sergeant in the Marines and campaigned really hard for you.

The blocking of stuff has gone overboard. Free speech advocates have warned about this path, and we are seeing it happen much faster than I thought:

Blocking Trump's speech about not accepting the election is not okay. I need to see it when the leader of my nation says stupid stuff. By blocking it, my Trump-supporting relatives can claim anything they want about it, and point to the "liberal media bias" and I have no leg to stand on now. I need to be able to link to it when somebody says "Trump would never say that!"

In another case, Twitter blocked the viral video of ballots being burned because Eric Trump tweeted that they were all Trump ballots. Virginia beach officials say they were just sample ballots. Well maybe they were, and maybe they weren't. One should not block a video of possible election tampering just because an official says it wasn't real. We need to know who posted it, and where the ballots were burned, and what the ballots were. I want to see the video myself. And I want angry people to investigate and find the truth. And if it was fake, the person who posted it should feel the backlash.

Flag it, mark it, whatever - but DO NOT BLOCK. *You* am the decider of what *You* believe is right and wrong, not Twitter and Facebook.

    • Why is why what Trump said was NOT hidden. It came with a warning only and it's trivial to give another click or two to get to it. Several channels cut away from him during his speech, but that's ok because it's not censorship and because the media are not required by law to pay attention to every drunken clown who's fallen into the gutter; there's only so much air time to try and cover important stuff.

      Yep.

I saw one pastor blog something like "I see claims that everything was above board. I see claims that there was fraud. I don't know which claims are true, but I do know which ones are being censored."

Tell you what, if their goal was to undermine public confidence in the election process, they couldn't do a better job than this.

    • We're living in a dystopian nightmare at this point. This is the kind of thing you expect to see in movies about a post-truth world. They're calling things misinformation that is impossible to be misinformation. For example, if someone says there was voter fraud, you can't say that's false without proving it. They say it's false then ban you. If you have to ban people then it's true. You can't call theories or beliefs false and misinformation if you can't disprove them. Can anyone disprove the claim that th
  • The censorship by big tech of the election has happened exactly as I predicted it would. The abuse of their monopoly platforms to steal the election and give it to the Democrats is inexcusable. Big tech must be regulated as a monopoly and this interference in our electoral process and constitutional rights must never be allowed to happen again. For right or wrong they have become the modern town square.

  • For four years, the media told us that the 2016 elections were stolen by Russia. They also told us that vote / election fraud is so rare as to be ineffective at swaying the results. Which is it? Now we know that the Russian interference story was manufactured (in other words, a lie), one can safely imply that the mewling about how vote / election fraud is ineffective is also manufactured.
