Its Official: America's Space Force is Better than Its Other Military Branches at 'Call of Duty' (taskandpurpose.com) 69

The military news site Task and Purpose reports: The U.S. military's youngest branch, the Space Force, just trounced its sibling services, as well the United Kingdom's military, in the second annual Call of Duty Endowment Bowl.

The transatlantic Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War tournament pit eight teams from the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, and Marine Corps, along with the British Army, Royal Navy, and Royal Air Force, against each other. Each team was captained by a civilian gamer and popular streamer who offered guidance and tips to players in real-time as they vied for the top spot...

The tournament was put on by the Call of Duty Endowment, which has placed more than 77,000 veterans into full-time jobs since its inception in 2009. This year alone, the endowment placed 11,000 veterans in jobs amidst the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

"Space Force isn't even a year old so this may have been their very first win in anything competitive against any of the other services," Dan Goldenberg, the endowment's executive director said during the event, according to Business Insider. "So it's a heck of a great way to start off their history."

Well, raise your hand if you got into IT because of computer gaming.

    • well buzz lightyear of star command eh space force have them covered there just dont let the evil zurg play star citizen
    • Star Citizen is so buggy that I doubt an entire tournament could be completed without someone falling through a planet or what have you:

    • You mean like the Army-Navy football games?

As a Democrat, I winch at the thought.

      • You guys need a new mascot. Like a rhino or something. Donkeys have a poor reputation.

Wasn't thinking about the mascot when I typed that out, but since you mention it, it does seem kinda extra funny.

As an anarchist, I don't put much thought into political crap.

It's a tradition from a 150 year old-ish political cartoon. I don't know if the Democratic party can just pick another animal and have it "stick".

Attempting to make Space Force sound competent using video games is not going to work.
    • Not competent. Likabe with "the kids". You know "Hello, fellow kids!"
This is PPP. Pathetic propaganda/PR. :)

    • It is meant as a moral boost for the soldiers.

      • I doubt they're doing anything immoral - unless morale is really that bad.

      • They are not Soldiers, they are called "Guardians".

However their mission seems dubious, as there currently is any real threat to our space infrastructure, that would need military style defense.
Usually for new branches of a military, they are broken from an existing unit, who had a specialist team who performed actions past their origional needs. Such as the Marines branching off the Navy. Or the Air Force split from the Army, as they were number of aircraft related actions.

The Space Force seems to be impl

No, but it might keep them out of real trouble if they would otherwise bumble around looking for make-work.

The youngest military branch won an esports game? You don't say...
  • put a full squad of the best "Guardians" in Space Force against some Navy Lieutenants who just finished training and got their commissions in a 7 day real life war game exercise and see how it goes.

Or for even more fun, put the Space Force squad against four Navy Seals :)

    • Just curious of you considered that it's entirely possible that Space Force guy could take out your four Navy Lieutenants without getting up from his chair. Just press this little button here ...

Officially, we're not supposed to have *nuclear* weapons in space under the OST, though any other weapons are allowed. Also officially, the NSA isn't supposed to collect information on Americans, and the F-117 officially didn't exist for seven years after it's first flights.

      • Put the naval officers in charge of some virtual space ships and run some space ship combat drills against the space farce and see what's what...

    • Just make them PROVE a real SPACE WAR. So, send them to the space and see what they can do.

    • Most of the Military Units, were an offshoot of an existing military. The Army was using Aircraft, has people who knew how to fly them, and were tactics and methods in play, where the Air Force broke away from the Army.

The Space Force seems to just appear to fight off some invisible baddies who could possibly be a threat in the future. But currently have no real experience in it.

    • Video Games are not like real life.
      1. Games are Balanced, Real life isn't fair. Call of Duty wouldn't be so fun to play, if you start the game, then you are being bombs from above from aircraft you can't hit. As real life, a war starts out with one side or both sides with a rather strong military, where a single troop isn't going to do much.
      2. Lives matter, You are not going to do something extra risky for points if it could kill you. Also if you are going to be shooting the bad guy, if you are not a psyc

      • Video Games are not like real life.

        Exactly.

Pitting soldiers with real world combat experience against a group with video game combat experience and then bragging about it is not a fair comparison. As you pointed out the mindsets and decisions made are going to be completely different. It's one of the main reasons i suck at PvP video games.

So, they should be putting both groups, all trained as real world combat personal during boot camp, into a real world scenario like they might actually end up in in the event of real military conflict and

Your taxes are being used for the militarization of the military.

  • I heard they were surprisingly good at paintball too.
  • The future of war is video games anyway. It'll all be fought with robots and drones in some proxy country.

  • Thanks for the information, But the Space Force became the US military's newest independent service branch in 2019. Unlike the US Army and Navy, it does not yet have an official e-sports team. Each of the eight teams consisted of four active duty service members, some of whom are part of their respective military service's e-sports teams. Other players, such as those in the US Air Force, were selected from a tournament.

The new branch has nothing better to do, but tweedle their thumbs. Probably half their day is spent doing nothing.

Sooo unlike other branches of the military. ;)

At least, from my experience with German, US and UK bases in Germany, the order of activity priorities seems to go like this:

      1. Drinking.
      2. Cleaning.
      3. Twiddling thumbs, all five of 'em.
      4. Special occasion drinking.
      5. Special occasion cleaning.
      6. Special occasion half-assed military training.
      7. Flying to a foreign country for special half-assed military training.
      8. Flying to a foreign country for special half-assed military offensive killing for somebody's profit.
      9. Flying to a foreign country for special half-assed military defending against some wannabe warroirs before they become bigger than three people.
      10. Dying. Of alcohol poisoning. (Jesus, they can drink!)

Be patient, give them time and opportunity, and they will surely sink as low as our other armed forces.

  • Itâ(TM)s not like we have any space fighters or space battleships for them to actually go out and âspace forceâ(TM) in. So of course they have more time to waste on Xbox live or whatever than the other branches.
