Canon Patents an Osmo-style Camera With Interchangeable Lenses

Canon could take a page from DJI's playback for its next camera. From a report: The company has filed a patent, first spotted by Canon News, that showcases a handheld camera that combines an Osmo Pocket-like design with its RF series of mirrorless lenses. The camera features a swivel mechanism that allows the sensor and lens mount to easily switch between forward-facing and selfie orientations. The design offers several advantages to your traditional camera when it comes to vlogging. The most notable of which is you wouldn't have to contort your hand to properly frame yourself in the shot. The fact the screen is always in front of you would also make it easier to keep tabs on your footage as it's recording.

I do. The Osmo is quite a good product and DJI is a leader in their field.

I love my Osmo Pocket.

But there is one really hateful feature in that product: you have to have a fairly recent cellphone with a USB-C port to plug the device in and register it with DJI. If you don't, or you don't do that, the Osmo refuses to work. Even if you never intend to use it online!

I can't stand this fucking habit of requiring a cellphone and an account on some site for anything and everything these days. Thankfully, with the Osmo it only happens once, and I could borrow a friend's cellphone to get past the stupid registration roadblock and finally get a working *STANDALONE* product.

I agree with you. The requirement of an online account is stupid. But letâ(TM)s not kid ourselves about USB-C. Itâ(TM)s pretty standard already.

I keep an old phone with no SIM card in it just for this purpose.

PS: According to Osmo this is so you can tell if the camera is new or not. I'm thinking it's more so they can make them difficult to sell second-hand.

Canon could take a page from DJI's playback for its next camera.

Probably mean playbook there - playback is related to media so it can create confusion. Then there is further confusion for the 99% of readers who do not know what an Osmo Pocket is (looks like a 360 degree rotating camera). I guess a healthy percentage would not know what an RF lens is (Canon's newer line of lenses to fit their more compact mirrorless cameras). And as the post continues it states this concept would be good for "vlogging", so we are targeting mostly the typical slashdot vlogger... You can see the facepalm coming already, I don't have to point out this is just some patent filings for a hypothetical future product.

I'm genuinely interested in something like this. Canon's current offerings are sort of notoriously poor for Vlogging, but Canon's lens tech is basically the envy of everyone right now. It fills an interesting hole in their product lineup and it would keep me from having to buy somebody else's product to get awesome stabilized video.

Being Canon, they'll probably dump the eye autofocus tech that's been added to the R5/6 or make it output some weirdo combination of format and refresh rate, but we knew it would

I believe these things are primarily aimed at Vloggers, a market segment that Canon doesn't handle very well.

Canon has great autofocus tech and extremely nice lenses, but tends to drop features from its pro- (R-series) and consumer grade (T and M series) still cameras so that it doesn't cannibalize sales of its dedicated video (C-series) equipment. For example, the EOS R6 doesn't support FHD@120Hz but does support 4k60.

Thanks Canon for sparing us from this by locking it behind a patent. Now if only they would have had the foresight to patent the selfie stick.

Sony QX equivalent?

This (as does the Osmo itself) looks pretty much like the Sony QX series cameras (introduced 2014), plus a mount handle with a trigger. The only real difference appears to be the swivel between the handle and the camera. I've got a Sony ILCE-QX1 interchangeable lens camera with a trigger handle that is almost identical to this Canon patent (and it is quite handy for some things). Sadly Sony discontinued their QX line but perhaps in the face of this Canon design they'll revive it with newer hardware?
