Facebook Sued for 'Losing Control' of Users' Data (bbc.com) 16

Facebook is being sued for "losing control" of the data of about a million users in England and Wales. From a report: The alleged failings were revealed in the Cambridge Analytica scandal, where harvested data was used for advertising during elections. Journalist Peter Jukes, leading the action, claims his data was compromised. Facebook told BBC News there was "no evidence" UK or EU users' data had been transferred to Cambridge Analytica. But the case against the technology giant, expected to last for at least three years, will argue a "loss of control" over users' personal data warrants individual compensation. The harvesting of Facebook users' personal information by third-party apps was at the centre of the Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal, exposed in 2018. Cambridge Analytica's app on Facebook had harvested the data of people who interacted with it -- and that of friends who had not given consent.

  • Why does the related stories algorithm select unrelated stories which attracted the most controversy? Was it written by people from YouTube?
  • New TOS documents will say they have the right to "lose you data" ... Problem solved.
  • Will that actually go to the individuals that had their data ganked and sent who knows where, or will it just be pocketed on a per-user basis by the lawyers and the government in their names? I've never seen an "individual compensation" case on this large of a scale result in anything more than pennies to the individuals actually affected. It typically costs more in overhead and postage than the amount of the payout.

Out of all the manipulation and data harvesting and shady things done by Big Tech that could fill libraries its the Cambridge Analytica thing they can't let go of because supposedly it helped Trump. If you only got your news from Slashdot you would think CA is 90% of the bad things Big Tech has ever done. Trump is out of office, Move on to harping about something else.
    • The only one not letting it go is you. This is about England and Wales, where Cambridge Analytica was based and where they had ties to the Conservative Party. No-one here gives a fuck about Trump.

I'm talking about coverage in the US including by Slashdot. But okay fine I guess foreign countries don't care about the US President so I guess all that Russian stuff you are pushing is also bunk?
  • That's not the users, that's the product.

  • I think its clear that Zuckerberg is a robot. I mean he is right in the middle of the uncanny valley, and didn't enter from the human side. Zuck doesn't lose control, he needs some bug fixes.
