Uber and Just Eat Takeaway CEOs Spar on Twitter as European Food Delivery Battle Heats Up (cnbc.com) 18

The CEOs of Uber and Just Eat Takeaway on Wednesday became engaged in a public spat after Uber announced it is planning to launch in Germany -- a market that is currently dominated by Just Eat Takeaway. From a report: Uber Eats will launch in Berlin in the next few weeks and potentially expand into other German cities in the coming months. The news was first reported by The Financial Times and confirmed to CNBC. Just Eat Takeaway CEO Jitse Groen accused Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi of trying to "depress" his firm's share price on Twitter on Wednesday. Shares of Just Eat Takeaway closed down almost 3%. Khosrowshahi responded: "Advice: pay a little less attention to your short term stock price and more attention to your Tech and Ops." Shortly thereafter, Groen replied: "If I may ... start paying taxes, minimum wage and social security premiums before giving a founder advice on how he should run his business."

  • I canâ(TM)t wait to see who is the winner of this Twitter war.

Really, this should be on the news!

Someone make a subreddit and meta Twitter!

Wait.... wait... that was sarcasm. No one actually cares.

    • Actually it's one shitty corp vs a run of the mill largely socially responsible corp who has been in this business for over 2 decades despite Uber having allegedly "invented" it only a few years ago.

      • Yup if this difference is legit: "start paying taxes, minimum wage and social security premiums" then writing it off as a spat between two equal alternatives is just lazy cynicism. If you think corps are allowed to be too shitty, well, this is where that battle is fought - where to set a floor on the race to the bottom.

Imagine your CEO starts a Shitter war online resulting in a public boycott. You're just the lowly worker who's being told at the end of the week they have to let you go because of a "subdued market" or some bullshit, but deep down you know what caused your job status change. Or more specifically, who.

All while said shit-talking CEO floats away under a golden parachute.

Yes. There are those that should care about Shitter wars.

  • good job editors. we literally have a story about tech where the only tech involved is a gps and a couple of bare-bones classified services listings masquerading as real businesses.

  • Any folks here who can illuminate the difference in how these types of companies have to treat the drivers? Are they still "independent contractors". I know in Germany they will have healthcare coverage regardless which is already a huge boon vs the US, but do they get other worker protections and benefits?

    • In Germany, it is completely illegal to be a contractor for only one company. That's called "Scheinselbstständigkeit" (fake self-employment) and was illegal since before I can remember.

And if you work for more than one, you're your own business, and bound by those rules. So for example, you are required to get certain insurances at your own cost. So the idea is that you raise your prices to fit your costs.
And then the general idea is that since it's not a monopoly over you, you pick the one with the be

We still know how to cook, pride ourselves in it, and do so, at least 6 days of the week.
