Alphabet's Wing Seeks Expanded US Drone Flight Permissions (bloomberg.com) 13

Alphabet's Wing Aviation is asking U.S. regulators to allow it to expand drone operations as a way to make more efficient deliveries controlled from a central command post. From a report: Wing wants to control its drone flights at a "central hub" from which the remote pilots can oversee operations without being in the aircraft's operating area, the Federal Aviation Administration said Friday in a filing in the Federal Register. The company also wants to launch drones from multiple locations within an operating area, and get FAA permission to receive less frequent checks from the regulator, the filing said. The agency posted the requests without saying whether it will approve them.

You, they deliver you. Your location, your likes, your habits, your interests. These are the same folks that want to know where the fuck you are presently going to so much that they are building a fucking driverless car to take you there.

        Kinda what I was thinking.

I don't want google to have drones too.

        • I'm also a bit worried they'll abandon the project mid-flight, resulting in civilian casualties below.

Alphabet's "Wing" subsidiary is the only company in the US to have a drone-based delivery service for shopping of groceries and similar items. They seem to be partnering with Walgreens.

The customer selects the Walgreens products they wish to order via the Wing mobile app, choosing from more than 100 over-the-counter medicines, wellness products, foods, beverages and convenience items (prescription deliveries are not available via this service). There’s no additional cost for drone delivery during the trial.

Deliver to you, nay man, deliver to the establishment, man. You know, drones flying about watching all of you American Criminals, any drone at any time able to hover close and listen in, monitoring wireless, phone locations, conversations in back yards. Delivering your privacy to the establishment, for them it's club med for you it's an open air prison.

  • Less frequent oversight is more like it. Far as "not in the operating area" well the military has demonstrated that can be done.

  • Is it a human? Does it think? What are its goals? Is it even self-aware? Perhaps there is no CEO of Alphabet, it's actually an algorithm that maximizes headlines that are only reported on out of obligation of this legacy business.

  • Nobody gave them permission to fly over me or my property.

    • Nobody needs to. You don't own the space above your property nor the resources below it. Depending on the state (so many jurisdictions have patchwork laws) you might only be able to control what happens up to 80 feet above your property, with numerous exemptions and easements. These laws also vary depending whether you own 40 acres with your home in the middle, or a quarter-acre with neighbors on three sides.
