VLC Media Player 3.0.14 Fixes Broken Windows Automatic Updater (bleepingcomputer.com) 32

New submitter imcdona writes: VideoLan has released VLC Media Player 3.0.14 to fix an issue affecting Window users and causing the widely-used software's auto-updater not to launch the new version's installer automatically. "VLC users on Windows might encounter issues when trying to auto update VLC from version 3.0.12 and 3.0.13," VideoLan explained."We are publishing version 3.0.14 to address this problem for future updates."

This issue is caused by a bug introduced in the automatic updater code of VLC 3.0.12 and fixed with the release of VLC 3.0.14. Because of this bug, VLC updates are downloaded to the users' computers, verified for integrity, but will not be installed as the auto-updater fails to launch the VLC 3.0.14 installer.

As a result I had to engage in a few extra mouse clicks. It was only by the grace of God that I survived.

"Developers fix an issue with their buggy updater, film at 11."

  • Version 3.0.14 is the best
  • Meanwhile there is a buffer overflow or something whack that happens when you try to play the roundhay garden scene ogv video file from Wikipedia. That but has been there since at least the mid 2000s and they do not give a shit.

    • Confirmed. I get the error message, "main decoder error: buffer deadlock prevented", and the file doesn't play.

And I get a volume adjustment issue which caused me to revert to a 2.x version instead, they seem intent on blaming users instead of fixing the bug which is clearly a VLC bug since using a different version fixes the issue.

  • Have they yet fixed the two second delay on key presses before anything appears on screen?

I get a delay when trying to scroll to adjust volume, both above and below 100%, the only fix for me was to revert to a less buggy 2.x version. VLC need to get their act together and fix their buggy shit before going any further with anything else. I now expect a better media player to come along and VLC to die a buggy mess.

Have you reported it? Have you provided diagnostic info? Have you seen if someone else has it (I don't, for instance)? Have you tried some kind of differentiation to aid them (e.g. it works on version X and Y but not Z, though my friend on Linux on Z says its fine)? Have you installed and "reset" the configuration to make sure it's not just the way you have it set up?

People do this with VLC a lot - people tell me that it does "bad thing X" and it's so drastic and affecting that they can barely use it.

  • I really appreciate the developers' efforts. Yes it can be buggy, and features come and go with different releases but I don't know what I would have done without some of it's unique features. It's allowed me to do things for our non-profit org that would not have been feasible with paid software.

In particular don't forget there's a whole lot under the bonnet (hood) that is accessed by CVLC. There's far more to it than "playing videos".

  • I submit bug reports for lots of open source projects. So far, over many years, VLC is the only one that actually bothered to take a bug report seriously and fix it. Out of dozens and dozens of other projects. The usual story is "it's not a bug," "we don't care," or "not important." My favorite is "if it bothers you so much, why don't YOU fix it." Right. Too bad your code documentation is utter crap, while your code has 20 layers of abstraction, creating a giant barrier to entry.
