Twitter Reopens Its Verification Process For First Time Since 2017 (cnbc.com) 29

Twitter on Thursday reopened its verification application process to the public for the first time since putting it on pause in November 2017. From a report: The company is rolling out a new process to apply for verification, which adds a checkmark to an account's Twitter profile that signals the authenticity of an account to other users. To apply for verification, an account must have a profile that includes a picture and a confirmed email address or phone number. The user must have been active on the service within the last six months with a record of adhering to the company's rules.

Additionally, accounts must fall into one of six categories Twitter will consider for verification. Those categories are: Government; companies, brands and organizations; news organizations and journalists; entertainment; sports and gaming; activists, organizers and other influential individuals. The company said it will add more categories, like scientists, academics and religious leaders, later this year.

Influencers, A-list celebrities, pro-athletes, politicians, celebrities B-D, under 18 teen girls who do make-up tutorials, amateur athletes, ...

Guys that make TikTok videos with laugh tracks, amateur beat boxers, guys making Subway sandwiches, ....

Pranksters that cause property damage, flat earthers, and finally ... credible scientists.

Notice they didn't just say "sports" :-)

  • Every statement made by a verified person, no matter how vile or criminal, is endorsed by Twitter and reflects the opinions of Twitter, its staff, subsidiaries, families, and sponsors. This precedent was set by the removal of Milo Yiannopolis' verification mark for his douchebaggery rather than any violation of the rules.

    • He was kicked off twitter for harassment actually. https://archive.ph/hWjWX [archive.ph]

But hey whatever makes you feel better.

      • no u feel better lmao!

According to your link, yes, he was kicked off for harassment. But not according to what Twitter said:

``. . .Twitter did not comment directly on Mr. Yiannopoulos`s account or actions of the past 48 hours, but the spokesman said over that period, ``We`ve seen an uptick in the number of accounts violating these policies and have taken enforcement actions against these accounts, ranging from warnings that also require the deletion of tweets violating our policies to permanent suspension.`

The question here isn’t why he was kicked off Twitter or any other unrelated matter. The question is specifically about why his verification was removed before he was kicked off Twitter.

If verification was only meant to indicate that he was the person his profile claimed him to be there would be no reason to remove it as a disciplinary action rather than simply suspending or banning him.

Nobody’s personal feelings about Mr. Yiannopolis are relevant to the question of whether Twitter is treating its verification program like an endorsement.

Twitter can do as they please, being a private company, So twitter endorses liberals. Parler endorses conservatives. I'm sure Bernie Sanders account would last all of two minutes on Parler. I'm supposed to be outraged because...?

    • But that was an outright lie.

      Which is worth what, exactly?

When I was a kid, we had a guy down the block who built a tree fort. But you couldn't come up unless you gained his approval and were given the secret handshake. We all went down to the park and played baseball instead.

Stuff that matters? Twitter is a joke, and has been a joke since its inception. The only noteworthy thing that ever happened was getting Trump impeached, now he's gone, there's no reason to use the site.

The fact that the layout actively stops you from using the site like a normal webpage, deleting content once it's scrolled off your screen means I have no reason to use it, as it actively punishes me while trying to navigate it's convoluted system. If someone wants to say something, then a news outlet will rehost their twitter, it's the most pointless shit I've ever seen.

  • May as well get some more people.
