India's antitrust watchdog has ordered an investigation into allegations that Google has abused the dominant position of Android in the country's smart TV market. From a report: The news comes hours after the European Union opened a formal antitrust investigation into allegations that Google abuses its leading role in the advertising-technology sector. In its initial review, the Competition Commission of India, which began looking into these allegations last year, said Google had breached certain anti-competitive laws.

This is one area where I think healthy competition has actually still existed in tech. FireTV may be based on Android, but it is an entirely different experience all together without any Google services. Then there is WebOS on LG TVs. And we have the Roku based TVs. And AppleTV. Samsung has Tizen OS. There are just about as many Smart TV OSes as there are Smart TV brands.
This looks like another case of "let's go after the big guys because its cool to go after the big guys right now"

This is comming from India where the brands that dominate the TV market may be different to what we see in the US for example (and those brands may well all be Android TV)
Also Apple doesn't make a TV so that doesn't really count when looking at the "Smart TV" market.

They're also not abusing their position. I have an nvidia shield box. (Well, tube.) It is a google tv device. It in no way marries me to google. I don't even have to have a google account to use it. I can sideload apps onto it. I can install alternate app stores on it. It doesn't even advertise to me!
