Google and Microsoft Clash Over Documents in US Antitrust Suit (bloomberg.com) 12

An anonymous reader shares a report: Alphabet's Google asked a federal judge to order Microsoft to hand over internal documents from certain executives that Google says it needs to defend a Justice Department's monopoly lawsuit. Google said in a court filing Thursday night in Washington that Microsoft refuses to search the files of 19 executives that are relevant to Google's defense.

Microsoft is a key player in the Justice Department's lawsuit, which accuses Google of abusing its dominance in internet search. The government says Google illegally used its power in the market to thwart competitive threats from rivals like Microsoft's Bing search engine. "No third party is more central to this litigation than Microsoft," Google said in the filing. Microsoft countered in a separate filing that Google's request for documents is unreasonable and burdensome. Microsoft said it offered to collect documents from 27 individuals and that Google has proposed it provide information from an additional 28, for a total of 55.

DOJ: when you're done with Google, don't forget to go after Microsoft next - and do it right this time around.

I think one factor Microsoft doesn't seem to get the general population still remembers Microsoft back in the 1990's-2010's.
Where nearly all PC sold came with Microsoft Windows, before internet was popular, so all Applications needed to be coded to run on Microsoft Windows, when the internet became popular, Microsoft quickly went to destroy the work towards going to an open Web Standard (Reliance on Active X) and making websites that will not run on other OS's and Browsers. Dominance in Office Productivity tools, as well strong growth in the Server Market.

We welcomed Google and Apple as Hero's. Using the open standards as a core part of their designed, creating a browser and OS that operated well, as well the growth of creating Open Standard Web Based Applications made these Apps cross platform compatible.

When Microsoft released its Zoom, to compete against the iPod, or Bing to compete against Google Search or Windows Mobile to compete against Android and iOS. People didn't rush to use them, they didn't really trust Microsoft anymore.

Sure Google and Apple are now the bad guys, compared to Microsoft who seems like they are the one more focused on long term support and general quality, but we still get a bit fearful having to use a Microsoft Product. like Bing, because the last thing we want is the primary Search Engine to bring us to Sites that only work with Microsoft products.

    • The "general population" doesn't remember, and prolly doesn't care.
    • Zune. Microsoft released the Zune to play music.

    • Except for all the shenanigans that MS are playing again with either automatically switching default browser to Edge or tricking people into doing it or totally ignoring the default browser when opening links from most MS software and using Edge anyway. Or all the Microsoft store trickery where instead of finding an installed application Cortana pops up a sales pitch for another piece of software sold on the store, sometimes Microsoft software. Not to mention the ads that seem to keep sneaking into variou

      ROFL.

Google somehow prevents other companies from developing their own search technologies and building their own hardware? Google somehow prevents people from using other companies search sites/engines?

Google has been around for a while. I use it because (a) I'm familiar with it, (b) it's fast, (c) it doesn't have a bunch of crap that I don't want (like background images), (d) doesn't require a bunch of Javascript to function properly, (e) doesn't try to push crap on.

I don't like Bing because it does many

    • 1 and 2 I will give you.
But it is full of crap I dont want, requires a bunch of JS to function, and constantly pushes crap.

      Why I normally use DDG
      • Search requires no JS to function. At all. The only requirements for JS are if 1: you want to see the google banner image above the search box, and 2: you want a "responsive design" search results page where the results align with the left edge of the window.

Without JS you get a 90's style single column centered in the window with huge amounts of blank space on the left and right side of the screen for a results page. You still get results no matter what.

  • So says Microsoft, the company who had assigned 12 different Microsoft employees to manipulate and steer a single magazine reviewer after Microsoft hounded the magazine editor-in-chief to get the product reviewed.

Remember, this was figured out after one of those people inadvertently emailed the internal group with an external addressee included.

Besides, Microsoft has lots of experience scraping it's email servers for court required emails so it should be a piece of cake. That is unless they are still using
