You Can Now Remotely Access Your Tesla's Camera - and Talk to People

The Tesla Oracle blog reports on a newly-released security feature "that enables Tesla owners to remotely view what's happening around their vehicles in real-time using their mobile phones..."

"While you have opened the live camera view of your parked Tesla car, you can talk back to the people in the vehicle's surroundings." The Tesla vehicle will change your voice, amplify and output it via an external speaker installed under the car. Teslas built since January 2019 have this speaker installed as part of the pedestrian warning system, a requirement by the NHTSA. In the last year's holiday software update package, Tesla introduced the Boombox feature using this external speak. Boombox lets Tesla owners add custom horn and pedestrian warning sounds to the vehicle.

Tesla owners will now be able to warn potential vandals more explicitly by giving them verbal warnings from a remote location...
In a tweet Wednesday, Elon Musk joked the feature was also "great for practical jokes."

There has been remote connectivity for Tesla's cars for years. People like you have been saying that, and yet it's not happened.

It's almost as if it's possible to properly implement mutual TLS to make sure that only the right people can access the right vehicle's functionality.

There are some interesting data protection issues with this. Does the car indicate that the cameras are active to people nearby?

Did they ever roll out the ability to change the pedestrian warning sound? That sounded highly illegal but it was promised at one point.

it exists and it's fantastic because that law is fucking dumb as hell. there are millions of nearly-silent gas cars and they aren't an apparent threat, but sure let's wring our hands and force manufacturers to add something useless and stupid to their cars.

If you get too close to a Tesla that has Sentry Mode active, it flashes the lights, and the display inside indicates that Sentry Mode is active. So yes, the car indicates that the cameras are active to people nearby.

I can't speak to the pedestrian warning thing, because my car is not equipped with the speaker.
