Finnish Researchers Say Their First Quantum Computer Is Up and Running (bloomberg.com) 21

Finland's first quantum computer was commissioned at a research center near the capital Helsinki, where scientists will use it to study next-generation computing power. From a report: The 5 quantum-bit computer was developed "to learn how to build a quantum computer, how to program one and how to operate one in the future," Pekka Pursula, research manager at the VTT Technical Research Centre, said by phone on Tuesday. The machine was the joint work of VTT and quantum computing hardware company IQM Finland Oy. "This 5-qubit computer has relatively low computational power, and it's not enough to solve practical problems," Pursula said. The researchers plan to build a 50-qubit machine by 2024 that could be used for applications such as modeling viruses and drugs, and designing materials that today's technology is ill-equipped to handle.

Finland Battles 'Exceptional' Malware Attack Spread by Phones [slashdot.org]

It's already sentient and trying to escape?

  • That it doesn't get infected with the malware from the story below!!

  • Now they can factor 15 so much quicker!

If they can keep it going up 10x every 3 years, it'll be interesting.

    • You will need a Beowulf cluster of them to factor 1.

Um, what now? A quantum computer announcement that doesn't proclaim it to be the solution to all of humanity's problems? Don't these Johnny-come-lately's know how things are supposed to work? If everyone started putting out honest press releases about their quantum computers it'd be a catastrophe.

  • Quantum Computing is Finnished.

  • I can't wait to find out all the possible solutions for 2+2.

      Well start studying chemistry. :-)

What the Finnish researchers actually said is that their first quantum computer is either up, running or both.

  • ... run Linux?

  • Besides Qbits I'd like people to provide the mean error time (if this is the correct term) for any quantum computer story in the media, i.e. for how long they can keep it in the coherent state - it would be quite useful. I also remember there were some issues with decoherence and extracting useful data out of the system - but maybe someone verse in the topic would provide more details.

Right now nobody has one that is useful. The errors are too great

Time able to stay in a coherent state is a little misleading. Using ions means your quantum state is stable. The rub of it is that it is so stable that it takes a much longer time to do an operation. This causes it to have too much error by the time you operation is done

superconducting semiconductor qbits meanwhile are fast to perform operations. But at the same time they decohere quickly since it is so easy to perform operation on them

  • I had a girlfriend once from there or another Scandinavian country, I'm not sure.
The only thing I remember is that during sex she always yelled:

    I'm not Finnish!
