Ukraine Alleges Russia Is Planning 'Terrorist' Incident At Chernobyl (cnn.com) 78

According to the latest updates from CNN, Ukraine's defense ministry claims Russia is planning to carry out "some sort of terrorist attack at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant" and blame Ukraine. The plant is currently without power and under Russian control. From the report: The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence claimed on its Facebook page Friday that "the available intelligence says Putin has ordered that his troops to prepare a terror attack at Chernobyl for which the Russian invaders will try to blame Ukraine." The directorate also repeated that the plant "remains completely disconnected from the monitoring systems run by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)."

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defence also alleged Friday that Russian forces had denied a Ukrainian repair team access to Chernobyl. It claimed without offering evidence that "Belarusian specialists" went there posing as nuclear power experts and that Russian saboteurs were arriving to set up a terror attack. The ministry claimed that "without receiving the desired result from the ground military operation and direct talks, Putin is ready to resort to nuclear blackmail of the international community."

The IAEA said last week that it had not been able to re-establish communication with systems installed to monitor nuclear material and activities at either the Chernobyl or Zaporizhzhia plants following the loss of remote data transmissions from those systems. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi said Thursday that the situation at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, occupied by the Russian forces, was degrading as the IAEA was losing "a significant amount of information" on safeguarding monitoring systems. However, he said he was "quite encouraged [...] on one important thing, is that Ukraine and Russian Federation want to work with us, they agree to work with us." "Both Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly claimed without substantiation that the other side is planning to provoke an incident involving nuclear, chemical or biological agents," notes CNN.

On Wednesday, Russian's foreign ministry claimed that the U.S. operates a biowarfare lab in Ukraine, "an accusation that has been repeatedly denied by Washington and Kyiv," reports Reuters.

  • CSPAN covered the Russian accusation today at the UN. I wanted to get just the quick of it, reading through the closed captions. I think it was Vasily Nebenzya that presented to the UN, but oddly enough I can't find his closed captions. I'm listening now.

    Putin doesn't really care what the rest of the world thinks, and knows that (barring a few idiots) no one in the west gives anything Russia says any credence. Any statements like this are intended for his internal audience, which doesn't have access to any "news" source that's not Putin-approved.

    • Uh not just his internal audience. I've seen Tucker Carlson, OJ Simpson, and Glenn Greenwald all propping that claim up, either on Fox or personal social media.

      • But who believes them? And even if believed by some, they're obviously not the intended audience. Putin wants to be able to finish up the war and tell his people "I saved Russia and the World, just like Stalin!"

      He cares, but the "NATO did it" bullshit was too flimsy once everyone caught wind of the other narratives Putin state media was spinning, the denazification, Ukraine is being controlled by monsters, Ukraine is basically Russia anyway. Which is it, for Putin national security or liberating Ukraine, or liberating Donbas? Protecting Putin from Ukraine or protecting Ukrainian-Russians from Ukraine government.

    This makes me laugh every time I see it. The entire ridiculousness of the US doing something like that. Even operating a biowarfare lab is unlikely, but...

    What's next, we have a lab where we created coronavirus in Saudia Arabia? Secret data centers in Kenya? An astronomy research unit hidden under the pyramids? The stargate in Afghanistan? A black hole hidden under the arctic?

      Secret data centers in Kenya are at least plausible, even if we can't fathom a motive for doing so. Not that it matters all that much where a data center is.

      • They are massive quantum computer data centers. They are in Kenya because they are powered by hyena laughs.

  • If bio-warfare labs are a problem, an extremely belligerent nation like Russia that has a policy of invading it's neighbours any chance it gets every time they smell weakness is probably the country to focus on. Nations like Ukraine that are super friendly to the West, overwhelmingly choose and ask to join Nato and the EU, and have never invaded any neighbour nor intend to, are very near the bottom of the list of countries with bio-weapons labs that concern me.     Workers at Chernobyl are in the process of repairing the power lines at the site [marketwatch.com].

    I guess Russia doesn't want more radiation flowing over the border into it's only ally Belarus where all those Russian soldiers are stationed. Wouldn't be good to have all those soldiers glowing in the dark. With the thousands of Russian soldiers already killed and captured, these would be easy targets at night.

      Exactly. It made absolutely zero sense for Russia to cause any problem in Chernobyl, given it being right next to Belarus and is now behind Russian front lines. Not to mention it would erode Putin's credibility at home and piss off neutral/friendly countries.

      However, it made total sense for Ukraine to make up these allegations to attract eyeballs so the West won't forget them.

      • I recall hearing that they're passing out Soviet-era gas masks to their troops to go along with the "Ukraine is hosting Western chemical and biological weapon development" story, so I'd go with "Nope"

  • You have a base solution sitting there in a beaker. It's been sitting there for years, covered nicely so that it can't evaporate. Every once in a while you check the pH and it remains nice and constant. Then after years of this, another guy comes in, adds acid seals it up and shakes it. Then he blames the first guy for the explosion. "Your so called pH stability experiment was highly vulnerable to the addition of acid and confinement. You should have known. You're going to pay for this".

  • It's all 'he said, she said' nobody knows what the real truth is. The Ukrainians want a narrative just as bad as Russia does. For example, there are three sets of casualty numbers, I've from Ukraine, one from Russia and one from Western intelligence, we probably won't know the real truth until the war is over, or maybe never.

    I'm not saying the Russians are good, I think the war is extremely unjust, what I'm saying is it's all about the narrative you want the world to see.

And the media these days don't care to actually fact check every juicy info, that's something that might happen after they posted it, as sensation is what atrackt viewers which in turn is how they get money. The Ukrain is just at good at manipulating the media as the Russians are.

        • ok. Fortunately we have other sources of information, such as satellite photos, and independent media. So with research you can figure out that Russia is lying and what the truth is.

          • Independent media? Are you really that naive? As I said, money is what creates the news. No media is to be trusted these days in delivering actual objective news, hell even satellite images give you the narrative you want unless you actually see a live stream and can identify who's who.

    Someone should collect a list of all the things they've said, so we can all have a good laugh. Most conspiracy theories already seem lame compared to their official announcements.

    Given that the situation is far from a laughing matter, and that it would be really useful to have some reliable information, they're not doing themselves a favour. The goal is clear: The west made loud noises leading into the escalation, then when war started, the collected we

  • Nuclear facilities worldwide should be setup with small patches of foreign owned land, such that attacking said facility would be an act of war on a swath of countries. They should be excluded from any power struggle, war, union action, everything, just a big no territory under any circumstance, or the whole world gets a free pass instantly to retaliate.

      To be clear though, there is no such thing as a "free pass to retaliate". Everyone is already free to attack at any time, they hesitate mostly because the Russian counter-strike could be extremely costly - the fear of condemnation by other nations is unlikely to be a major factor considering that Russia is an aggressor against a (loosely tied) ally. That situation doesn't necessarily change dramatically just because a Russian attack strikes a little patch of soil that nominally belongs

      LOL, You don't know about embassies. The US embassy in various parts of the world have been attacked and this goes back at least 70 years. If people knew about it we'd be at war all the time. The only good assignment is when you're from another country and you're assigned to the US embassy. That's a cake walk. Chances are that nothing bad will happen to you. Other civilized nations like Canada, England you're probably also safe. Anywhere else you're on your own.
