Google Partnering With iFixit To Sell Pixel Replacement Parts

Google is partnering with iFixit to sell official replacement parts for its Pixel phones later this year, making it easier for independent professionals and consumers to repair the devices. From a report: The news follows similar moves by Apple and Samsung and will cover models ranging from the Pixel 2 to the Pixel 6 Pro, along with future Pixel models. The parts will sold through ifixit.com and be available in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and European Union countries where Pixels are sold. The parts, which will include batteries, replacement displays and cameras, will be available either individually or in iFixit kits, which include tools needed to perform the repairs like specialty screwdriver bits, Google said.

Seriously, the story got my hopes up. At first I thought they were going into the old parts business. I have two old boxen that just need new fans to live again. Not great computers, but what they did was good enough and would still be useful.

And I was seriously disappointed by the lack of jokes on the Windows 3.1 story.

Apparently not, but I admit I'm trusting the professional opinions on that. However the example of the batteries (in another branch) is a better one. In particular it reminds me of a pretty good Samsung smartphone that died simply because the replaceable battery became impossible to replace. (Which is why I didn't buy another Samsung even though my wife is on her second or third.)

Hopefully they are not ancient stock. I've got a stack of pregnant phones on my shelf that are otherwise perfectly fine.

The problem with Pixel phones, at least to to the 5 or 6, is that replacing the battery requires removing the screen.

It's possible but not easy. You need special tools, and it probably won't be waterproof afterwards.

I bought a replacement battery from iFixit for a Pixel 2 and while I can't fault their kit or instructions, I failed to get the phone back together again, so regrettably I had to trash everything. The problem for me was my old eye balls and the parts are so tiny. Maybe a pro-magnifying lighted-glass would have helped. Next time, I'll pay for such a service, or better yet buy a phone with a user-replaceable battery. It hurts for me to do this with old hardware, but it was just too small for me to work with.

My screen is already peeling away from how bloated the battery is in my current phone.

I fixed my phone this week after it bulged last month. But the Moto G6 just has a glued-on backplate, and the battery was kind enough to pre-split it for me. I just had to run a metal spudger down the edge where it hadn't split yet, then dribble in some Goo Gone to unstick the battery. And thanks to my rubber protector case, I only needed to barely tape it back on.

What we learned from Google Glass and the office applications That Google has no ability to do nothing but monetize users. They cannot respond to changing needs or provide support. So outsourcing to a company that does have this expertise is a really good idea.
