Sony Could Have a Trio of New Gaming Headsets on the Way (theverge.com) 17

Sony might be ready to announce a new lineup of gaming headsets, according to a report from 91Mobiles based on information provided by OnLeaks. From a report: Rather than being specifically PlayStation-branded, like Sony's Pulse headset, the three headsets will apparently be part of a new gaming hardware brand from Sony called "Inzone," which could also include a pair of gaming displays. Leaked images show the three so-called H-series headsets with a similar white color scheme to the existing Pulse headset. The H3 is wired, and has a USB-C port with a physical volume dial. There's a button marked "NC/AMB" shown in renders of the H3, which suggests it might support noise cancellation and have an ambient audio mode to allow players to hear what's going on around them.

Wow, new gaming headsets from a company that is apparently now afraid to put its own brands (sony or playstation) on things because that brand is increasingly and justifiably associated with bullshit lockdown restrictions to try to stop you from using your own equipment the way you want to. I remember my friend building a circuit to strip the copy protection signal from toslink so that he could copy his own purchased CDs onto minidisc reliably back when that was actually regularly turned on, and also to copy minidisc to minidisc, this has been a thing with them since forever.

Sony has totally jumped the shark, without exclusives the Playstation brand would be dead already. How much longer will it make sense for them to even make a console?

Remember Sonicstage? That POS software from Sony that forced you to use their shitty ATRAC format when copying to their audio devices? Loved the Sony net walkman back in the day, it was so tiny, great for running... but being forced to use Sonicstage eventually made me ditch the device.
  • Can someone explain this to me? From all I've seen you get subpar shitty sound with a subpar shitty microphone, but with a 50% price increase for looking cool?

For roughly the same price as the "Good" (for certain values of good...) gaming headsets, you can actually get a professional headset that has better sound quality, better mic quality, better build quality, and generally has replaceable parts...

    • Same for "gamer chairs" and "gamer cases" and "gamer glasses"

Now being this is from Sony, a company with still a pretty decent reputation in the world of professional headphones and studio monitors that it would be good quality, but the fact they are putting a "gamer" brand name on it now you are probably spot on with it being pretty gash for the money

      • There are actually “gaming wireless routers”, which are supposedly “optimized for the frequencies at which gaming occurs”.

I believe gaming mice and keyboards, but anything else smells absurd to me.

If they actually game with a Flash-endorsed “gaming ruler”, would buy it for the memes.

    • The Logitech G Pro exists between worlds.

While I do not doubt that some brands add "gaming" to mark up their prices, there are some features that gaming headsets have over professional headsets. With professional headsets the focus is on the quality and not the use case.

      • Multichannel sound: Games are not as immersive if in stereo only. I have not found any professional headsets that offer surround sound or the approximation of it.
      • USB, Bluetooth connection: multiple ways to connect using USB or Bluetooth
      • Wireless: Whether via bluetooth or some USB
  • "The Little Sony That Could". Of course, it's completely fictional.

  • When I first read the summary I thought this might be about an item like VR headsets where there is a decent amount of innovation happening. Who cares about whatever earphones Sony releases? None of them look terribly interesting or ground breaking.
