Gmail's Redesigned Interface, Featuring Chat and Meet, Now the New Default

Gmail is now rolling out a new user interface that will show Chat and Meet sections on the side pane by default. From a report: Google introduced this new integrated view earlier this year through opt-in options, so you had to manually enable Chat and Meet panes. However, as the new phase of the rollout is starting, the company will force you to opt out if you want the classic Gmail view. Google says the change is rolling out to Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google accounts alike. This includes Google Workspace Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, Education Fundamentals, Education Plus, Frontline and Nonprofits, as well as G Suite Basic and Business customers, and Google Workspace Individual users. Only Google Workspace Essentials customers will not see the change, or those Workspace customers that have only been provided access to Gmail and not other apps.

it's absolute garbage, i think google is changing it up out of malice.
i know they have tons of webdevs who need make-work jobs, but c'mon, at least keep the previous interface available -- it costs you nothing, and saves your users from a new interface that would have been discarded prior to the roe v wade SCOTUS ruling.

It's a strange recent flavor of dupe that is very technically a different story, i.e. the same story at different points in time for no reason.

It's just as pointless as a normal dupe, but somewhat more likely to require editor coordination or memory, so could it be intentional?

Google used to keep their services separate, but one day The Suits decided to provide "an integrated experience" during a caffeinated push to compete with Facebook, and personal info from one service kept bleeding into another. I had a lot of 'splaining to do to family and friends. F Google!

I use Thunderbird to get my gmail via, um, imap? pop3? I don't care. It downloads all my mail 4-5 times a day and I read it in Thunderbird. Which isn't great, but all things considered the best I'm gonna do unless I want to setup and pay for my own domain.

I got sick and tired of endless UI changes pulling the carpet out from under me. I just forward gmail to TB, and refuse to update TB. Email is a mature technology, and has been really for decades.
