During his weekly Ask Me Anything today, CEO Adam Mosseri confirmed that Instagram will begin testing ultra-tall 9:16 photos "in a week or two." The Verge reports: "You can have tall videos, but you cannot have tall photos on Instagram," Mosseri said. "So we thought maybe we should make sure that we treat both equally." Currently, Instagram tops out around 4:5 when displaying vertical images that've been cropped accordingly. But introducing support for slimmer, taller 9:16 photos will help them fill the entire screen as you scroll through the app's feed. Portrait photos aren't nearly as bad as vertical video. But 9:16 is quite a narrow ratio for that. The traditional 8:10 is a bit wide for portraits with one person but 9:16 is so narrow it would only work well for a head to toe shoe. Then again, given that Instagram is all about fashion and food photos it probably fits.

What was wrong with the 3D tv's? Tons of TVs are using 120hz or faster panels, why not add some kind of control signal (maybe IR, or RF) so that users can buy shutter glasses and watch the small number of 3D movies (or the even smaller number of 3D movies that actually look good in 3D) if they want?

Putting the face camera on the phone makes people use it. It's just there.
The tall aspect ratio of the phone is clearly responsible for the recent flourishing of tall aspect media, which is seriously irritating. Luckily I have a rotating monitor, so when there is no other option, I guess I'll have a working display.

Professional photographers don't use take portraits vertically, neither do most portrait painters. It's not really better for portraits. If anything, square or 4:3 is better, unless you're trying to highlight your cleavage. Tall skinny pictures are just kind of aesthetically awkward. IMO, the point of an instagram post is to show you someplace more than just highlight your face. We all know what your face looks like...but your face at a cool vista or having a fun experience?...isn't that what the influ

IMHO, Android and iOS should be modified to prevent shooting video in portrait orientation. If you think about it, a portrait is usually of a person which fits with the whole selfie-absorbed generation. Want people to be less self-absorbed? Make them shoot everything in landscape orientation.
