Dodge's Electric Charger SRT Concept Has Fake V8 Noise, Exhausts (carthrottle.com) 178

"Dodge has given its electric Charger Daytona SRT Concept a set of fake exhausts and one of the loudest artificial V8 noises we've ever heard," writes Harry Waring via CarThrottle. From the report: The car features some interestingly named components that make it stand out from the rest of the EV crowd, such as the "Rupt" simulated multispeed transmission and a "Fratzonic" chambered 'exhaust' which emits a 125 dB "Dark Matter" noise (yes, we're serious). According to Dodge, the battery-powered machine is supposedly as loud as a Hellcat with its supercharged Hemi V8. The unusual names continue with the 800V "Banshee" propulsion system, which delivers power to the car's 21-inch wheels. We're yet to hear about official performance figures, but stopping power will be provided by six-piston brake callipers. The 'Fratzog' logo sits on the car's front and rear ends, previously used on vehicles produced by Dodge between 1962 and 1976, now representing the brand's electrified future. You can watch (and hear) it in action here.

How sad can you be where you need artificial engine noises? Who would see this functionality and think "I need it"? The joy comes from machines that are inherently loud and powerful (not limited to cars), not just a fucking speaker embedded in the car. If your car is freakishly quiet, enjoy that you have a freakishly quiet car, that in itself has novelty.

I agree. My car has a nice exhaust note, but it still comes with a module to make stupid extra noises over the interior speakers. I just coded that out. If I want to hear the mechanical symphony better I will just crack open a window.

Dodge is trying (and failing) to not alienate their fan-base while following EV mandates. It's a no-win situation. The Hellcat forums are chock full of vitriol. The one thing they won't tolerate is change. Dodge can either abandon their fan-base and just make a random car, or they can try to appeal to nostalgia. That's why this concept looks the way it looks, and (sadly) sounds the way it sounds.

At least in this case I can say that aside from the fake noise (which I hope can be shut off), the styling and capability of the concept are actually... kind of cool. And I've been in Hemi Chargers for the last decade and a half. A hatchback that looks like that? Wow. Faster than a Hellcat? Cool. A cockpit that isn't just a single Tesla iPad glued to the dash? Nice.

      But I'm in the minority.

The key is to make a new thing that is good in its own right.

The first design requirement of the EV Hellcat should be to kick the ICE Hellcat's ass on the drag strip. That, they will respect.

Whereas fake noise is just embarrassing.

        • They don't care about that. The consumer Tesla model 3 absolutely smokes the Hellcat for example in a drag race, and I don't think they respect that. Apart from range, and being an annoying noisy wanker, EVs are technically superior in every way. The problem is Dodge design cars for dicks, so if they stop creating dickish cars, they won't sell.

Later they started just piping fake engine noises over the sound system, because it was cheaper and easier to tune. It also has the advantage of allowing the car to be quiet until the driver accelerates hard or goes into sport mode.

    • How sad can you be where you need artificial engine noises?

I can somewhat understand the desire for artificial engine noises. I grew up driving a stick shift and no tachometer and, yes, I listened to the engine to determine when to shift (up or down). So having some sort of noise which represents the speed or efficiency of the car might be a better solution than some gauge that you look at (versus the road).

That said, there's no excuse for having the noise outside the cabin.

      • I listened to the engine to determine when to shift (up or down).

Except with an electric, there won't be any shifting. All that needs done is press the pedal. There is no reason whatsoever to have the same shitty sound come out of an electric vehicle as does an ICE to annoy everyone around.

BMW, Ford, and others have ICE car models with this feature. Improvements in ICE drive trains have resulted in some models becoming so quiet that they use the entertainment system to make motor noises to give the driver that "satisfaction" they crave.

I was in Oslo a few weeks ago and realized how quiet the city was - the sheer number of electric cars there actually really dampens the road noise. I am very much looking forward to a future where all of the engine noise is gone. No more engines idling at traffic lights, no more noise as motors rev so people can pull away from lights quickly..

And then we have these idiots at Dodge...

    • The blind are lobbying for electric cars to make some sort of noise, so they can hear them coming at crosswalks.

Your next electric car may be required to make a standardized noise, specified by a regulation backed by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

      • Most of them do, but they only need to make the noise while travelling under 25 kph or so; in other words, while pottering through parking lots, near crosswalks, and so on.

They also tend to make backing-up beeps.

There's no need for them to be emitting noise while cruising down the highway at 110 kph.

  • Tesla had to put in fake noises otherwise pedestrians would be way more likely to get hit by a silent car.
  • ...of how to permanently disable the sound system that produces that 125 db of noise. I think the neighbours might like to know. BTW, sounds over 85 db are harmful.

Alternatively, wouldn't it make more sense to put the sound system INSIDE the car for the driver's benefit rather than outside to annoy the neighbours?
  • In "The Dilemma" (2011) we have fake sounds from a Dodge Charger V6 to make it sound like an S.R.T. V8...

You know you've landed gear-up when it takes full power to taxi.
