Twitter Launches an Edit Button for Paying Subscribers (bloomberg.com) 27

Twitter is launching an edit button for the first time, after years of debate both internally and externally as to whether such a feature was a good idea for a product known for making posts go viral. From a report: The edit feature will soon be available to users who pay $4.99 per month for a subscription to Twitter Blue. Edit Tweet, as the feature will be called, will let users make changes to their tweet for up to 30 minutes after it's originally published. Tweets that are edited will carry a label, and others on Twitter will be able to click on the label to see prior versions of the post. The company is specifically testing the edit button with a small group of users in hopes of quickly resolving possible issues, the company wrote in a blog post. The edit button will then roll out to Twitter Blue users in the coming weeks.

    Own your tipos.

      • You forget, people focus on the wrong things these days. Mistype something and you'll be corrected by everybody including the janitor.
I've also seen culturally, that for the twittwats it somehow makes them feel superior if they can catch a misspelling or serious grammatical error.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to drink my covfefe before it gets cold.

      • If you can't use typos as an excuse for canceling someone, then what's the point of twitter?

      • I have never understood the mentality of "We should have long and pointless arguments because somebody wrote "not" by accident because they started a sentence intending it to end one way, got interrupted, and write it another way at the end."

Edit isn't "Hiding your typos", it's "Make sure your comment actually says what you intended it to mean so nothing is derailed."

There is zero value in typos. They say nothing about the person who made them, they do not add to the conversation, it's absurd anyone would want them. (And evidence that someone wants forums for point scoring and finger pointing, rather than serious discussion.)

Well it's not about typos, it's about simplifying the conversation.

        Bob: Says outrageous thing
Frank: Responds in outrage to outrageous thing
Bob: Edits original tweet so its no longer outrageous

So once Bob has edited his tweet how does it display in the context of Frank's reply? Do you show the original Tweet, negating much of the effect of the edit (and making it confusing when you view the 'original' that has changed), or do you show the edited tweet, potentially making Frank's reply incomprehensible.

        There'

        • Per TFS, what they do is show the edited tweet with a link to the original tweet.

What you do if you're a journalist is show whichever tweet is relevant, not whichever one you think is most inflammatory. But that one might also be the most relevant one.

They are already adding information to tweets about factuality and such, so this is a pretty small step.

I still prefer it without editing, but if they can actually monetize editing, why not? I get it, it's a business.

No, that feels too much like damned Slashdot!

    • You don't even need to pay to edit your tweet. Just delete the tweet, and re-post the corrected tweet.
  • And the fee should be relative to the number of followers. Maybe a penny per edit per thousand followers.

      • It'd be more productive to require people pay per typo or mistake proportional to the length of time it remains up before an edit. But that'd be impossible to meter.

Do you want serious discussions based upon what someone actually intended to say or do you want the ability to insult someone you don't like because they spelt something incorrectly?

Hello. Are you new to the Internet? Because, you already know the answer to your question if you aren't new. Of COURSE people would rather insult someone, for any reason, than have a serious discussion.

        This guy. Serious discussion? Hell.

      • I'm thinking it is typo's or later recanting what they wanted to say. For orgs/people with high follower counts, they use twitter as a mechanism for their brand, be it a actor/actress or "influencer" or company. So stick em with a fat bill when they are desperate to retract or alter if it hits their brand. Personally I have never used twatter and never will I think I can safely say. I've always felt it is just absolutely stupid. Influencer's are just the popular kid, who was usually pretty stupid and any se

but this seems like an incredibly petty thing to monetize... like charging for ringtones, or subscriptions for heated car seats.

    • Not sure about how he did car seats are going to go but ringtones was a multibillion dollar industry. The openness of modern smartphones definitely hurt the industry but it still exists it still makes a ton of money. People buy stupid shit. Also Twitter is desperate for revenue

BMW tried that, a luxury brand. The well-to-do expect to get full service after purchase, not have to haggle over little stuff, especially things related to booties. Know your customer. Really dumb move.

    • but this seems like an incredibly petty thing to monetize... like charging for ringtones, or subscriptions for heated car seats.

With so much of Twitter's traffic being bot-driven, the jig is just about up with an advertising-based revenue model. So they're going to nickel and dime users for the rest of it.

  • Whats the point in paying to fix a mistake, something anyone changes their minds to publish when everyone can look to see what it was? lol not something i would pay for

Twitter as an online platform that incentivizes the worst social behaviors in all participants.

The issue that I don't think could be solved is that Twitter actively encourages emotional hot-takes followed by a tribalist mobbing behavior. Combine that with maximum tweet length and you have a recipe for disaster we see. Essentially, Twitter is 4chan that spilled into real life and got adopted by everyday people that are ill-prepared to deal with getting trolled on all fronts (personally, paid-for trolls, algorithmic trolling).

So yes, edit button will do nothing to help. What they should do is hide likes, hide retweets and followers from public view to discourage mobbing. However, that will tank engagement because mobbing is why people participate.
  • I never said that.
    QED.
  • I tu make tipos sometimez!

  • Once they canceled their OnlyFans-like adult content subscription idea, they went this route.

But only idiots on Twitter wouldn't realize that they can just delete a post and re-post it, instead of editing it.
