Reddit Has Been Down For More Than An Hour (theverge.com) 180
Reddit is currently experiencing a big outage affecting its websites and apps, according to the company's status page. The Verge reports: "We've identified an internal systems issue and are working to determine a fix," the company wrote at 12:56PM ET on its status page. The preceding message, from nearly 40 minutes before, notes that Reddit is "is currently offline." The problem appears to be widespread, with about 50,000 people reporting issues on Downdetector.

Reddit lets you edit, which is nice if you have a tendency to sometimes accidentally words out.

Give me the fun of Fark, the moderation of Slashdot, and the segregated groups and threaded messaging of Reddit. ...then add a paid tier where you still have public anonymity (including being able to spawn multiple aliases from the base account) but you're privately ID'd (until the inevitable data breach, I suppose), only another paid account is allowed to complain about your posts, and the complaint review process is automatic, by humans, and punishes the complaining account for false accusations or stalki

Then one day I replied to a comment with "That's retarded", and my comment was deleted because that sort of horribly offensive language is not allowed.
Cultural differences. It's like people say "spastic" all the time in the US, but in the UK it is horribly offensive. (or was that the other way around?)

I still visit from time to time, but I find that this site is becoming less relevant. I usually see the stories on Reddit way before they show up here. And I find that this site is so much worse for letting me know when someone has responded to my posts. Definitely cuts down on how much I participate.

Reddit seems like it does everything now, like the old USENET but weirder (if possible). It's shown up at the top of a lot of searches I've done for various things. Just never had the motivation to head there as a real user. I'd definitely be there before twitter though. But I'd miss all the abuse I get there.

Back in the day, Slashdot WAS my Reddit. I visited this site daily.
Then I discovered Reddit. IMHO there is a wider variety of subs there that cover my interests that aren't tech-related. (Plus I like the posting and karma system better.)
Now I just drop in here very occasionally (or if Reddit is down).

Slashdot isn't as echo chamber-y as Reddit, because you can't karma rape posters here for going against the groupthink. The worst a post can sink to here is -1. I frequently see posts on /r/politics (despite the name, it is far-left biased) which expressed a controversial opinion, that later were deleted by the posters to preserve what remained of their karma.

I do think there are some folks who rock alts for modding, though it's hard to tell. There's a heavy pro-Elmo group think here, but that goes for just about every nerd and tech focused forum because folks think of him as "one of us". I do like that there's a good mix of right and left wingers here though.

I rarely see calls for public ownership of means of production on r/politics. It's definitely not as heavily moderated as r/conservative too.

Reddit links come up a lot in my Google searches, so obviously there is some SEO bias there. Those links are generally really slow to load (when they load at all), and usually consist of one post with a "see more of this discussion" button, surrounded by the rest of the page filled with what can only be described as highly extraneous shit.
That being my main experience with Reddit makes it highly unlikely I will ever sign up there.

I still remember one of the first "gumstick" web servers being posted here and promptly hacked, complete with a posting of the root credentials.
I did a bit of grey hat work and did something like `cat /proc/kmem` which at the time tried to read all of the kernel memory into kernel memory and was, well, bad for the server when run as root. But it may have saved it from further harm.

This does kind of suck, because I find Reddit really useful for trying to troubleshoot or at least get confirmation of weird issues at our workplace.
It's surprising how few free support resources there really are for some of the widely used products out there (even O365 SharePoint!). I've gotten better, faster help from suggestions on Reddit forums than anyplace else.

I don't find ChatGPT very useful when the question has to do with such things as if other users are experiencing what seems like a recent outage or error caused by a problem on the cloud side? It has more historical information than real-time feedback on what others are seeing.....

I tried learning Godot 4 with it, and I had to ask it to correct the many errors it got from it, and it ended up saying "Hm, that should have worked, must be something wrong with the new Godot 4, try updating it to the latest version".

You're wasting your time. Reddit is a completely toxically moderated environment (both in many individual subs, and on a global level).
I still remember telling someone in a 3D printing sub he's going to burn down his house. He told me he felt threatened and reported me. I was banned, and appeal held up. About a year later the same guy posts a picture of the fire damage he had.
