France Plans To Recommend Ministers Give Up TikTok, Other Apps (bloomberg.com) 14

The French government is planning to ask cabinet ministers to avoid using TikTok and similar apps on their personal phones, Bloomberg News reported Thursday, citing two people with direct knowledge of the discussions. From the report: The government is mulling the guidelines in part over concerns about security with the Chinese-owned social media app, according to one of the people. They requested anonymity in order to discuss private deliberations. Social media apps such as TikTok are already banned from their professional phones. The UK banned TikTok from government phones on Thursday, citing security fears. The US Congress restricted the app on government devices last year and European Commission employees were told to delete it by March 15.

  • if "Other Apps" include things like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or US-run competitors to TikTok, then the US government is going to have some serious words with France...

    • I'd imagine the US government, as a whole, couldn't really give two shits about what apps France decides to install on it's government-issued phones. Maybe the CIA cares, but that's pretty much their job.

And good heavens, France would undoubtedly tell the US government to fuck right off if "serious words" were issued about something that idiotic. Why would you possibly imagine France, of all countries, would kowtow to US wishes in something like that?

      • Because he has the stupid idea that France surrendered to Hitler because he does not grasp the concept of a country be overrun by a superior force, like Iraq by the US, or Vietnam^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H

  • Why are cabinet ministers using TikTok anyway?

(or anybody else over the age of 14)

    • Elected officials register on TikTok to communicate with the young population and try increase political engagement within this age range. Inter alia, French politicians who have issued short speeches on TikTok include: President Emmanuel Macron (about importance to stay at school; about covid vaccine hesitancy) and former minister of health Agnes Buzyn. Member of parliament and left-wing party leader Jean-Luc Melenchon and former Presidential candidate Eric Zemmour from right-wing are also present, presuma

Member of parliament and left-wing party leader Jean-Luc Melenchon and former Presidential candidate Eric Zemmour from right-wing are also present, presumably to try capture interest of the young voters who are significant portion of their voter base.

Presumably they don't record or edit the video themselves, they have minions for that. Also to publish it on TikTok.

They probably want to consult by themselves what videos their opponent has published, or check who has more views or more likes. After work they go home and log onto their social network account, which they created long before being elected, like everyone else. For example Anne Lalanne @enimar68 was the pseudonymous twitter account of runner-up candidate (to President) Marine Le Pen where she just retweeted the things from her husband and from her political sphere of influence, like any other regular low-le

  • A perfect opportunity for the French government to rub elbows with those they represent!

Just put on your yellow vest and go out and revolt with your people!

What are the French revolting about now? Raising the retirement age, and Macron has apparently done this outside normal channels.

  • Many modern workers carry two phones: one for personal; one for work. Is there any reason that elected officials can't do that? One phone for frivolity, one for business.

I'm watching 'Severance' on Apple TV; it's about a complete separation of personal and work life. You go home and completely, totally forget what happened at work. And vice versa. There are problems with strict compliance, and yet the idea has some appeal.

Especially if your job involves national security.

The one day you'd sell your soul for something, souls are a glut.
