Verizon Raises Prices Again as Wireless Customer Growth Slows (bloomberg.com) 33

Verizon Communications is raising prices on some existing wireless plans to help boost revenue and offset slumping subscriber growth. From a report: Starting with September bills, customers on Mix and Match plans will pay $3 more for single lines and $5 extra for multiple lines, Chief Financial Officer Tony Skiadas said Wednesday during at an investor conference. The price hike is Verizon's third increase in two years. Last month the carrier marked up its wireless home internet prices by $10. Rival AT&T Inc. this month began charging $2.50 more per month for its top-tier wireless plan.

Verizon and AT&T, two of the three largest US wireless carriers, have been raising prices on more popular offerings in an attempt to widen profit margins as mobile phone subscriber growth slows. Both carriers have been signing up fewer customers than T-Mobile US Inc. and are losing market share to cable companies Comcast Corp and Charter Communications, which have been offering free mobile lines.

    Full disclosure: I own VZ and T. It's been a sucky year all around. Seriously though, you want phone service from Comcast? Lawsuit time maybe? Comcast has a lot of cable monopolies and now they're dumping product in the mobile market? That doesn't sound right. I'm holding for the long term, and wouldn't mind seeing irony of T suing Comcast for abusing monopolies, not one bit.     • On most things, I'd agree with your headline. But when it comes to cellular service, you only pay top-line Verizon (or T-Mobile, or AT&T) prices if you want a so-called "free" high-end phone.

      A better option: Buy an unlocked phone, such as Moto G, $200. Sign up for T-Mobile, AT&T, or Verizon prepaid wireless, about $25-30 per month. Unlimited data and calls, just like the expensive plans. Or go with Boost, Mint, or Consumer Cellular, companies that specialize in low-cost cellular. I've been doing thi

      Faster declining market share? I mean, if you dont want to spend money on premium services, apparently you can go with Consumer Cellular, if the commercials are to be believed *lol*

      How about oversaturation? Everyone and their dog has a smart phone, hell I have two. Don't judge. People are also holding on to smart phones longer. It's not like cellphones have really brought anything to the table worth upgrading for in years. I've had my current personal phone for 3 years and I plan to have it till one of us drops dead.

      So, maybe its just because nobody needs a new phone.

      Worse, it's "slumping subscriber growth". How did they not see this coming? There are only so many people, and a known birthrate, etc... At some point people settle into things and are loath to switch (again), especially to just save a few bucks. Companies raising rates/prices simply to "help boost revenue" seems like a dick move -- probably done to help executives with their stock bonuses and/or golden parachutes.

      Asshole pumps me for info, disappears into rear room, some agent at the central office makes estimates on by income, I can easily pay max.

      Comes out, fails to push an S22 on me, want S23. No discount for being a Verizon customer since the late 1990s, to say nothing of care packages.

      Nothing as everybody else in the market will rise prices as well. After all, there's no agreement between big corps. No, sir, no way!

  • I dumped Verizon maybe 9-10 months ago. Cut my bill by more than half, around $65/month. No issues with US Mobile and they even use Verizon towers.

    Verizon offers NOTHING that merits a higher price.

  • Here in New Zealand 2 Degrees like to try similar shit. They don't put prices up, they discontinue your current plan and move you to a 'better' plan that costs more. You can always move to a cheaper plan than before, but you get less than before. I wasn't sure if less would cover my needs so I let the increase slide.   • Their 5g rollout has been horrible. If my phone says 5G at the top, it usually means I have no data. People started turning off 5G networks, so they then removed the ability to turn off 5G networks in their new phones. Whatever benefit their networks had is no longer good enough to make people chose them and their limited device support over the other GSM based competitors.

  • I left Verizon with their last price increase. I'd been with them for 12 years or so, and go tired of the increases with no upgrade in services of any type. I'm now with T-Moble, and have unlimited everything for less than what I was getting with Verizon's 200mb internet per month. I never really had a use for internet away from home, but now I that I can, I can watch Youtube videos or TV episodes while waiting for things IRL.

        Do you think Verizon [firewalltimes.com] and AT&T [firewalltimes.com] are immune from data breaches? Your confidential personal data is not safe with any corporation, and until the CEOs are held accountable for their piss poor security, that won't change.

      Yea, and I suspect the Big 3 will rasie prices to MVNOs they don't own to make up for losses, resulting in MVNO raising prices as costs rise.
